CHRISTOPHER L. B. LAVELLE

Dr. Christopher Lawrence Bannerman Lavelle passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia on December 28, 2020, after a long illness. He was born in Darlaston, United Kingdom in 1938.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eileen, his two daughters, Maria and Bridget, his brother Anthony (Tony) and their families. Dr. Lavelle was a devoted husband, father and brother who was always quick to laugh or to tell an outrageously funny story.
He attended Birmingham University where he obtained a Dental degree and a PhD in oral biology. In 1975, he moved with his family to Winnipeg, Manitoba as the head of the Oral Biology Department at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry. He remained a professor at the Faculty of Dentistry for the next 30 years. Over his tenure, he was an accomplished academic and teacher. He published numerous articles and taught hundreds of students. He retired to Victoria, BC in 2004.
Chris will be deeply missed by family and friends in Canada and England.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to charities of your choosing.

  • Dr. Lavelle was definitely one of the most memorable instructors during my dental training days at the University of Manitoba. He always greeted you with his toothy grin and was a gentleman with charm, wit and an abundant sense of humor. He was a champion of education and made it fun to be a dentist. My sincere condolences to the Lavelle family. - Posted by: Nancy Auyeung (teacher-student) on: Jan 14, 2021

  • Dr. Lavelle knew how to command attention in a lecture with his wit, humor and knowledge. One memory that I still often think about was from the summer of 1982 when I was working at the Faculty of Dentistry in a summer clinic, where dental and dental hygiene students provided care for patients. An opportunity came up where I could provide dental hygiene care to the inmates at Headingley Correctional Centre for one week. Dr. Lavelle kindly gave me rides there for the week, and each ride included a humorous story, along with some advice to consider when working in a penitentiary environment. He was inspiring to work with! He will certainly be missed and will always be remembered. Condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Lila Jorheim MacInnes (former dental hygiene student) on: Jan 14, 2021

  • Dr Lavelle was my favorite teacher when I was in Dental Hygiene. He was a brilliant man, and so funny. He made every lecture fun and interesting, and I looked forward to his classes. I still tell stories about him to this day, and even something this morning (before hearing about his passing) made me think of him. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. - Posted by: Shelley Hindle (Demkiw) (former student) on: Jan 14, 2021

  • I graduated in 1988. I have taught part time for 26 years now and Dr Lavalle was a mentor to me. I try to make it fun for the students like he did and share real life experiences so they remember and have meaning to the message I wish to convey. He truly was one of my top three profs and I cherish his memories and helping me become one of the best dentists I can be. He always directed me with great advice and heart to heart talks. Always had a smile when I was around him and left me with a smile. One of the great people to be around and a true gift for humanity. I loved him like many others in the faculty did. I smile as I write this just thinking back! Best memory was when he told me which profs not to piss off! He will never ever be forgotten and made schooling fun and memorable!!!! - Posted by: Kenneth Hamin (Student ) on: Jan 14, 2021

  • He was a brilliant man with an incredible sense of humour. He was an amazing instructor. One of my favourites by far! I looked forward to his classes. He had such a way of bringing some very needed comedic relief to some very stressed out dental students. My condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Samantha Klassen (Former student) on: Jan 13, 2021

  • May your Family please accept my sincere condolences. Your Husband and Father was a wonderful influence on many students. Incredibly insightful, articulate and always urging students to think and evaluate things critically. I am eternally grateful for his influence, guidance and conversations great and small. Plus the occasional denture adjustment he may have required in Hart Lab. He knew where to find a Jelenko handpiece when he needed one! So sorry for your loss. • How wonderful to have known Dr. Lavelle! Smart, witty, fun, wise, and kind. He was such a terrific role model! I see him sitting in the library, early in the morning, reading up on the latest in several journals that he followed--always broadening his knowledge. Lectures with Dr. Lavalle at the podium were guaranteed to be engaging, insightful, and fun. He put the fun in learning. • Dr. Lavelle and his lectures on Disease and Therapy were the most entertaining, and I loved being in Oral Diagnosis for emergency clinics with him as supervisor! He would always take me aside to confirm the diagnosis, then provide me with his witty treatment plan, that always seem to include the words "cold steel" as the remedy. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed, RIP Dr. Lavelle. - Posted by: ALAN GRANT (Former student) on: Jan 13, 2021

  • Chris was a colleague of mine at the U of M. He was also a mentor with who I discussed dental science and research during my Masters degree at the Faculty of Medicine in the 90s. We shared great debates and laughter. He was a profound advocate for education. It was my pleasure to know him. - Posted by: Patricia Ling (Colleague) on: Jan 13, 2021

  • Adieu, Dr. Chris, you endured bitter Manitoba winters for nearly 30 years, to the Faculty's benefit and betterment. Always ready for a wee craik with the gossip from the Hallowed Halls, or a question about the latest paper upon which you were working. May you continue with research in anthropology in the Hereafter. RIP. - Posted by: William H. (Bill) Christie, former professor (Colleague) on: Jan 13, 2021
