JUDITH LEIGH BACKMAN
March 22, 1973 - December 28, 2020

Only a few days after her 47th Christmas, and after having happily decorated her apartment in Mission, BC, Leigh suffered another seizure resulting from a brain trauma she had been fighting for years. She left all of us much too soon with just memories of her wonderful life.
From years at the cabin at Brereton Lake, travels through Europe with her family and home life in Winnipeg her stories grew, and from across the country they are being rekindled by the many mourners who all loved Leigh. Her boisterous laughter, infectious smile and zest for life characterized her appeal as a grandmother, mother, daughter, sister, friend and confidant. A keen and interested listener, Leigh was always easy to relax with and to share stories and troubles.
She was a tough cookie who lived and loved hard. But as the years went by her health problems took more and more of a toll. Her body no longer had the strength to combat this final episode and she slipped away from us. Leigh was a remarkable young woman, beautiful, smart, strong-minded, independent and fiercely determined to make her own life's choices.
She shared happy times with her grandparents, Kitty and Bill Aitken, Mary and Emil Backman, parents, Enid and Bill, brother Tony, sister-in-law Melanie, and son Rick and Linzy, parents of Leigh's grandsons, Dominick and Kayden, and of course all her many friends. She will be missed.

"An angel whispered in my ear
Believe in me and have no fear,
...your earth days are done but don't be sad
Remember all the times you had
...Your body dies your soul is free
That's why you get to fly with me.
From An Angel's Hand by J. F. Connor.

Much thanks to the wonderful caregivers in BC, especially the family in whose home she was welcomed. Thanks to you she was hopeful, joyful and loved.
Good bye Leigh. You'll forever be in our hearts and thoughts.
When Covid allows, a Celebration of Life will follow.
Donations may be made in her name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

  • I grew up on Guildord street with Leigh and her brother Tony. I remember the whole family living in the big, white, three story house when the kids were little. Then they moved away for a few years to journey abroad. Upon returning they lived in the smaller house next door to look after Grandma. I remember Leigh being a gorgeous blonde girl with a bubbly laugh and a cheeky sense of humour. Tony honed his amazing drumming skills with hours of rigorous practice. I loved hearing him play. Both of the parents were kind and welcoming to all of the neighbourhood kids. I have some great memories of spending time in their yard. - Posted by: Fran Mortham (Friend and former neighbor) on: Jan 10, 2021

  • I met Leigh when we attended Golden Gate Junior High, we had a big circle of friends that all hung out with everyone. We would all meet at Strathmillan school and chill at the park. One summer, there were about 10 of us, we would walk to Assiniboine Park daily just to get together. That was a crazy summer, we had fun, nobody got in trouble. We were all together. Rest In Peace Leigh. - Posted by: Ruth Gosselin (Friend) on: Jan 09, 2021
