DAVID ALEXANDER MCELHERAN

David's family sadly announces he passed away, peacefully on December 31, 2020 with his family at his side.
He is survived by his wife Carole, of over 55 years; his adult children, Catherine, Allan, Kenneth and Rubi; his grandchildren, Hannah, David, Ava, Sabrina and Charlotte. Each of whom meant everything to him.
He always had a story or wisdom to share with them. He had several careers and retired from the Federal Government as Assistant Deputy Commissioner of the Competition Bureau with Industry Canada. In retirement, David found pure joy volunteering in the cardiac unit of St. Boniface Hospital for many years. He brought comfort, encouragement and humour to patients recovering or waiting surgery.
We are grateful to Dr. M. Raabe who extended David's life by many years. David spent long hours in CancerCare as a patient; the family is thankful to the doctors and staff for their dedication. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Health Sciences Centre WRS-2 for the kindness and compassion they had extended in making David's final days peaceful and surrounded by family. We feel blessed to have had their support.
There will not be a funeral due to Covid-19.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to CancerCare Manitoba or St. Boniface Hospital cardiac unit.

we cannot see". Hebrews 11:1

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Dear Carole and Family, I am deeply saddened to learn of Dave's passing.  Dave and I worked for many years with the Competition Bureau.  He was a great Manager, Mentor and Friend. I appreciated all of our great conversations we shared about work and family.  Please accept my warmest condolences.  He truly was a gem!  I can still hear him saying "Good Stuff". Rest in Peace Dave! - Posted by: Janet Okabe (Colleague) on: Feb 01, 2021

  • Carole, I am so deeply sorry to heard of David's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. - Posted by: Diane Wilding (Friend ) on: Jan 21, 2021

  • Dear Carole and Family, my wife Christine and I wish to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of David. I had the privilege of working for Dave when I was living in Winnipeg and he was Regional Manager of Electricity & Gas Inspection in the Prairie Region.  Although not my immediate supervisor (who was another fine guy named Dave), Dave's door was always open and ready to receive anyone for a chat about work or life in general. He had a profound impact early in my career with his continuous encouragement and affirmation of our skills and in his belief in our capabilities. Many of us who worked for Dave were greatly inspired and motivated by his wisdom and leadership! These led me to pursue opportunities in policy work in Ottawa where I stayed and recently completed my own career as a manager of our policy division.  I also recall Dave's strong love of family and volunteering. Dave was a very kind and giving person...while we were still in St Boniface, he even took time once to come over to my house to give me some great tips on exterior painting! I will not forget Dave's funny sayings and stories, and positive outlook on life. May Dave rest in the peace and love of God, and may God bless and console you and your family with much peace, love, and strength. - Posted by: Deacon Guy Dacquay (Colleague) on: Jan 14, 2021

  • My deepest sympathies Carole and family. I was fortunate enough to have worked for Dave for 9yrs while living in Winnipeg. Now retired, I look back on that time as some of the best years of my career. Dave was a story teller manager and through his skills, he had the uncanny ability to bring out the best in his staff. He cared about people and it was not unheard of for him to offer his support and assistance not only at work, but in the personal lives and projects of those he worked with. Dave had an impact on all who knew him. His many sayings (such as “I always liked you best” ...which he said to everyone) are likely still remembered by those whose lives and careers he touched. Dave believed in people and was a champion in wanting to see them succeed. I know that my career and the careers of many others would not have followed the successful paths that they did, had it not been for the benefit of having worked with/for Dave. You will be forever remembered, Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Bruce Lyng (Colleague) on: Jan 13, 2021

  • It is with great sadness that I heard of David's passing. I spent many years as a colleague of David, listening and learning from his anecdotes and appreciating the love and pride he had for his wife and children. Although we were officially colleagues I take comfort in the fact that we became friends over our careers and could always count on David for his sage advice. He will be missed. - Posted by: Dermot Jardine (Colleague) on: Jan 12, 2021

  • We have been incredibly fortunate to live beside Dave and Carole for the past 13 years. Couldn’t have asked for better neighbours! We will always remember our wonderful long conversations. Dave was always there for our kids, helping them with gardening, giving them hot chocolate and other treats. Dave was an amazing person, always calm and fun to chat with. I admired him so much! I will never forget him. My deepest sympathies to you all. xo - Posted by: Kerenza Plohman (Neighbour) on: Jan 11, 2021
