LARAINE ELIZABETH MAY COLL
(nee PAXTON)
July 22, 1942 - January 5, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Laraine surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at the age of 78 after a lengthy battle with dementia.
Laraine will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Kathy, Susan (Mike) and Erin (Sean); sister-in-law Liz (Tom), and grandchildren, Jenna, Matthew, Megan and Evan. Laraine was predeceased by her husband Roger in 2001 and mother Elsie in 2008.
Laraine was born on a small farm in Neelin, Manitoba. Although an only child, Laraine had many cousins who were like siblings to her. She married Roger in 1964 after training as a registered nurse. After working for several years as an ER nurse at St. Boniface Hospital, she trained as an occupational health nurse, working at Hudson's Bay, Domtar and the University of Manitoba until her retirement.
Roger's career as a United Church minister took them from Winnipeg to Climax, SK, Atikokan, ON, and Winnipeg (Transcona and Fort Richmond). They were active in the church and had many treasured friends. Many summers were spent at the cottage at West Hawk Lake, in addition to travelling. They loved to dance and are now reunited to do so once again.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vista Park Lodge for their excellent care in her final years.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in Laraine's name can be made to the United Church in Meadowood (https://ucim.org) where she was an active member for many years.

  • May we offer our condolences! Dementia is so hard. My parents Al & Marg Earis spoke fondly of Mr and Mrs Coll over the years of their friendship in Atikokan, On - Posted by: Lori Earis (Family Friends) on: Apr 23, 2021

  • My condolences to all of Laraine's family. Knowing your mother over the years I've always enjoyed her friendliness and bright spirit. May your happy memories of your mother and father help to bring you comfort and peace. - Posted by: Helen Whetter (Friend) on: Mar 01, 2021

  • Dear Kathy, Susan, Erin and families, May I offer my sincerest sympathies and prayers for Laraine's death. There are so many fond memories of all of the Coll Family. It seems like yesterday that you were teenage girls in my living room. And later your Dad became my boss at the Conference Office. His death was overwhelming for us all. Laraine and Roger were soulmates and it is a gift to know they are together again. Take time for yourselves to cry, and yes, to laugh. Memories are always in our hearts. Blessings and love, Lee Rye - Posted by: Lee Rye (Friend) on: Jan 12, 2021

  • Dear Susan; it is with a heavy heart that I write to you this message. I extend to you my deepest condolence as you mourn the passing of your mother. Your Mom was a great lady and I always admired her for her determination on continuing her education. She was well ahead of her time and I believe passed along this work ethic to her daughters. Take care, Susan, and pass along the same to your sisters. - Posted by: Vanda Altomare-Postello (School Friend of Susan's) on: Jan 11, 2021

  • Laraine and I went students together at Windsor School and Glenlawn Collegiate. We often saw each other at the lake and then we both lived at Vic Wyatt House. My condolences to you, her family and may she Rest In Peace and Rise in glory. - Posted by: Jocelyn Burgess Barnard (school friend) on: Jan 10, 2021

  • Deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved Laraine. I shared an office with her when she first worked at U of M. She was a delight to work with. She loved her family very much. I’m so sorry. She was a real gem. - Posted by: (Leona) Leigh Page (Past coworker ) on: Jan 09, 2021

  • Laraine was one of the enduring connections to the Lockerby side of our family lineage. From my recollection as a child when I first met her, and from subsequent occasional visits either to Winnipeg or when she and Roger toured out east, I remember the deference of a daughter, the devotion and pride of a wife and mother, the pragmatism of a nurse and all within a persona of humour, vitality, confidence and grace. She was a dear niece of our mother who spoke of her frequently and fondly and with whom Laraine maintained a genuine connection. Our most sincere condolences. - Posted by: John Davidson and family (Cousin ) on: Jan 09, 2021
