March 16, 1957 - January 11, 2021

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Vern, our loving husband, father and friend to all whose lives he touched.
After a brief illness, and with his loving wife and daughters at his side, Vern left us at the St. Boniface Hospital on January 11, 2021.
Vern was born on March 16, 1957 in Port Hope, Ontario. At the young age of 16, he found a lifelong passion in driving truck. He owned and operated his own company for numerous years before finding his home at Rothesay/Darling. He made many good friends over the years there and was very proud of his work and the friends he had made.
Vern met Denise, the love of his life, when he was 22. Not long after, Denise too got her Class 1 license, and the two of them hit the road as a team. During the summertime, with little Carole in tow, they travelled across the country as a family, with Vern never missing a chance to make life more enjoyable; picking up treats and Archie comic books for Carole whenever they stopped at a truck stop.
After a few years on the road, they relocated out west; spending time in Salmon Arm, Revelstoke and Drayton Valley, in search of a peaceful, simple life for his family. A little later in life, the family moved back to Manitoba, and started a new chapter in life. Together, they took in their first foster family, and with that, his family grew to include five new members; Angie, Wendy, Greg Loretta and Sam. They had many adventures together, including packing all the kids into the cab of a truck and heading out to Disneyland. In spite of their busy life, Vern and Denise still found time to travel together, with a trip to Hong Kong, and many to Acapulco, creating memories they could cherish for a lifetime. Later in life, he became the family confidante; never missing the opportunity to listen to his loved ones talk about their day, and all their hopes and dreams. He always knew what to say, and how to make people forget their problems, and feel better about themselves. His special, empathetic ways will be sadly missed by all he knew.
A lifelong passion of Vern's was animals; from cats and dogs to his horses, he found peace and comfort in being with all of them. He was also an avid reader, and especially loved to get lost in his westerns and cartoons.
Vern is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Denise, his daughter Carole (Jarrod), sons, Robert and Michael, stepdaughter Renee, his foster children, Angelena (Dave), Wendy (Kevin), Greg, Loretta (Corey), Samantha (Chad), Valerie, Ashley, Erin, Tara, Terry, Natisha, Sunshine, Sunflower, Sweetgrass, MorningStar, Desiree, Jasmine, Dominique, Jhett, Josephine, Agnes and many others that were short term stays with his family. He is also survived by his mom Shirley, sisters, Karen and Kathy, brothers, John and Michael; his cousins, Lorraine, Ethel and Verna; many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, 39 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Vern will be truly missed by all who knew him. His kind smile. His infectious laughter and his jokes.

"That man is a success-
who leaves the world better than he found it;
who has never lacked appreciation of the world's beauty or failed to express it;
who looked for the best in others and
gave the best he had..."

Due to Covid restrictions, a Celebration of Life is being planned at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society in Vern's honour.

  • He was more then just a dad or father figure he was my hero and is now my angel. He has made such a difference in my life as a child in care. He allowed me to be able to trust men and that not all men are mean and hurtful. He was a grace of God put on this earth to help many children and people. I miss his laugh and smile and of course all his jokes. But most of all I miss his presence at the clubhouse. Dad I miss you and love you until we meet again xoxo. - Posted by: Wendy Higgins (Daughter) on: Jan 27, 2021

  • First of all I would like to say how very sorry I was to hear of the passing of Vern. He has touched many lives over the years. I also want to say how much I have appreciated both Vern and Denise for the love and care they gave so many children who needed a home and to know that these children are now contributing adults to society. Denise, please know you will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. To all the children and grandchildren, remember Vern how he was when you interacted with him. You will always have those memories and though he may not physically be with you, he will still always be near. Remember that you are never alone because God has you all in the palm of His hand. - Posted by: Wendy Phillips (friend) on: Jan 18, 2021

  • Vern touched the lives of so many people, even in his childhood. He was full of laughter and a joy of the outdoors. From an early age he was musical, learning to play the piano and sing songs he heard on the radio. He liked to entertain with corny "knock-knock" jokes. He tolerated alternatively playing Barbies and toy tractors in the mud. He was the one the small pets gravitated towards and he had a gift for calming horses. As a brother, although younger than me, he was protective and full of advice about boys. He was intolerant of injustice or any sort of mean spiritedness. He worked hard and found joy in his family. Every child mattered to him. He was modest about the good work he and his beloved Denise did and the love and support they gave to others. Vern was a great man in all the ways that matter the most. Rest in peace my beautiful brother. - Posted by: Karen Radke (Sister) on: Jan 16, 2021
