MERV JANZEN
Merv is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doreen; and children, Bonnie (Ivan Kelly) and Jeff (Mirjam Berloth). Merv was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Margaret and (twin sister) Myrtle; and brothers, Leslie and Clifford.
Merv grew up in Plum Coulee, MB, leaving home with friends at the age of 17 to explore eastern Canada and the United States. Merv eventually settled in Winnipeg where he met and married the love of his life, Doreen. Merv embraced Doreen's Ukrainian heritage and family, developing strong, lifelong bonds with his sister- and brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews. Merv was a gifted carpenter, building two homes for his family, as well as contributing to the construction of many other structures around Winnipeg. Merv eventually switched careers to work at Stoney Mountain Penitentiary for 25 years as a carpenter instructor, and later, as a supervisor. In retirement Merv and Doreen (and Siggy, their poodle) spent a number of years snow-birding in Arizona for the winters, and when back home, continuing to help others on carpentry and related tasks until he was no longer able. Merv was an avid reader and longtime sports enthusiast, including being a loyal Jets and Bombers fan. He had a generous, friendly and kind disposition and was always willing to help his family and neighbours. His wife and children could always count on him. Merv was also very community-minded, volunteering each year at the Christmas Cheer Board and during retirement, becoming very involved in community gardening. Merv was especially proud of having co-founded the Gateway Recreation Centre which eventually became a thriving sports hub in North Kildonan.
Merv was loved. He will be profoundly missed by his wife, children, relatives, and friends.
Cremation has taken place; a memorial service will be held for Merv at a later date.

So sad to hear Uncle Merv passed. He and Doreen always held a special place in my heart for their kindness and assistance to our family, when his twin sister, Myrtle, my mother needed help during a difficult time. Though we have been separated by much time and distance, I will hold a special place in my heart forever for a wonderful man and his wonderful family.
