After a short illness, Anna passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Grace Hospital at the age of 92.
In 1949, Anna married Jerry McCarthy who predeceased her in 1988. Anna is survived by her brother Bob Finlay SJ.
Anna's humour, love and generosity will be remembered by her children, Kerry (Dee Jay), Dan (Felicite), Maureen (Dave), Kevin (Rhonda), Colleen (Peter), Sean (Carolyn). Mom was known to her twelve grandchildren as Grandma, Granny and Grams and to her ten great-grandchildren as their ggma (gee gee ma).
Anna and Jerry worked as a team to provide the best life possible for us. They established a loving atmosphere within their family. It was important to them to share that love with as many others as possible. So, Mom and Dad welcomed all of our friends into our home and down to the cottages at Grand Marais and Wanasing. Dad led all of us on morning runs; Mom followed with the youngest in the stroller. Our friends called their time at the cottage "McCarthy Boot Camp"!
Later when we had moved from home, our friends would drop by the house. "Your Mom," they would say, "is so easy to talk to." For Mom, every visit was her way of sharing her love.
In 1997, Mom moved to Colorado Estates, a life lease in St. James. She was very proud of the facility and savoured the independence that living at Colorado Estates brought her. She enjoyed playing cards, coffee time and monthly catered meals with her friends. Mom loved going on bus trips to casinos with her friend Betty.
Mom was happiest joining family for birthdays, Sunday suppers and family reunions at Wanasing. She was a fierce competitor in card games, board games and enjoyed working on crossword puzzles with her grown grandchildren.
We will miss Mom dearly, but it is comforting to know that the team of Anna and Jerry are now reunited. With the two of them still sharing their love, heaven will be a better place.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Dear McCarthy Family, As side by side neighbours for many decades, I have fond memories of seeing our mothers having a chat over the white picket fence. Treasured are recollections of Isabel, Zoe, and Anna, the three ladies from Sackville Street. When the homes were built in the late forties, they were all young wives soon to be mothers. Collectively, their lives played out side by side. My deepest condolences for the loss of your dear mother. She was a very fine lady whose friendship and conversation my late mother enjoyed. Sincerely Darlene Oliver - Posted by: Darlene Oliver (Neighbour) on: May 14, 2021

  • Please accept our deepest sympathy to the McCarthy family from the Pitre family. My mother Jean was best friends with Anna at St. Mary's Academy and they have been very good friends all these years. I had just looked at a 1948 picture of my mom and dad's wedding and of course Anna was maid of honor! I'm sure these best friends are now again together! Rest in peace dear Anna. - Posted by: Glenn Francis Pitre (Friends) on: Feb 19, 2021

  • My deepest condolences to the McCarthy Family on behalf of my family. My memories go back many years to my own childhood as Mrs McCarthy was my mother’s best friend in high school and they remained friends for life. Jean & Anna grew up together and shared most of life’s challenges. Mother has passed but I know very well how much she cherished both Anna and Jerry’s friendship throughout the years. Anna was a very caring, kind and loving woman and I am saddened at her passing. - Posted by: Cathy Monteith (Pitre) (Friend) on: Feb 19, 2021

  • Very sorry to hear this. I grew up with Mrs. McCarthy and her family and would always stop by Sackville after the kids left home. She would ask about my sisters, brothers and Mom and Dad with interest. Another good one has left us. That leaves Mom and Dad as the last of the parents on Sackville. The greatest street to grow up on. I can see them all getting together on the front steps watching us playing in the street. With love. - Posted by: Russ Hinds (Neighbour) on: Jan 24, 2021
