JOHN IRVING EVANS

It is with sadness, but also immense gratitude for the gift of his life, we announce the passing of John ("Herkie") Evans on January 17, 2021, at home with family by his side.
Dearest husband of Anna Ruth Evans (nee MacKillop) for 69 years. Loving father to Paula Evans Nash and John Bruce Evans, and wonderful father-in-law to Gordon Nash and Catherine Hill Evans. Proud grandpa to Trevor (Lynne), Lauren (Brandon), Conner and Courtney, and cherished great-Papa to Cayden, Logan and Leo. Dear brother to Bobby Evans and brother-in-law to Margie Evans and Kaye Evans. Predeceased by his sister-in-law Margaret Evans and his older brothers Roy, Lou and Lloyd with whom he shared a middle name.
John was born at home on May 12, 1927, in Sydney, Cape Breton Island to John Evans (a British Home Child) and Florence May (MacInnes). He graduated from Sydney Academy and obtained his accounting diploma from LaSalle University. John was a career Federal Public Servant who accepted increasingly responsible positions in Halifax, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Moncton where he retired as the Director of Supply & Services. After retirement John and Anna moved back to Winnipeg to be close to family and their cottage at Victoria Beach.
Golf was John's passion and he taught most of the family how to play his favourite game. In a second career spanning almost 20 years, he managed the Victoria Beach Golf Course which he called 'his labour of love". John was instrumental in transforming the golf course to its current design.
Herkie, as he was known to family and his closest friends, faced numerous health challenges over the last few years with incredible strength and grace. John was able to be at home with Anna, Paula and Bruce in his final days, thanks to the compassionate support and exceptional care of the Grace Hospital CAU, the Manitoba Palliative Program and Home Care Personnel. The family wishes to thank the staff and management of Sturgeon II Retirement Residence and Home Care personnel for their dedication and heroism as front-line caregivers and their wonderful care of John during the time he resided there.
Online condolences and memories (and photos) of John are welcomed and can be shared at www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com.
A service via video streaming will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. (CT). Info and a link to the service will be posted at the Wojcik's Funeral Home website.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, www.alzheimer.mb.ca or to Prairie Spirit United Church www.prairiespirituc.org

  • I am sorry for you loss. I met Mr. Evans at the Victoria Beach Golf Course. As a young boy I came to the course on Tuesday afternoons, paying $1 for green fees. Mr. Evans started this to encourage children to play. As a young adult I was an employee of Mr. Evans for two summers. On my first day I was welcomed with a piece of home made pie. On my last day he set aside a little time for all the staff to join him for small talk and a piece of carrot cake I brought from the bakery. - Posted by: John Forrest (employee) on: Feb 04, 2021

  • Our beloved grandfather has passed away. He meant so much to our family, and we will miss him terribly. He was such an influence in our lives and was loved by all who knew him. He lived an amazing life and shared so much wisdom with all his grandkids. I know I am a better person because of his care and influence. • My sincere condolences to Anna and all of John's family. I worked closely with John all the years he was under contract to manage the Victoria Beach Golf Course. John was instrumental in planning and overseeing the many improvements made to the course, including the installation of the sprinkler system, during his tenure. He operated the course like it was his own and always kept a close and constant eye on the operating revenue and expenditures. John practically lived at the clubhouse and on the course working tirelessly to make sure everything ran smoothly. John was an absolute joy to work with, a true gentleman in every sense of the word and was held in very high esteem by all those who knew him. In recognition of his outstanding service, following his retirement, John was awarded a lifetime membership to the Victoria Beach Golf Course. Rest in peace, John. • My sincere condolences to the Evans family at this sad time. I was fortunate to work with Mr. Evans from 1978 onward while a Human Resources Personnel supervisor at Supply and Services Canada. It was a pleasure working with him as he treated everyone with respect while expecting the best in return. I recall him being instrumental in my career change after he called me into his office and blatantly said "What do you want to do with your career? You have to make up your mind." I have him to thank for pushing me to take up the challenge and leave the human resources area, where I was very comfortable but also ready for another challenge and greater responsibility. I have never forgotten him for that because I know he was looking after me. I was pleased to see him once again after I retired and he drove his wife to a clothing boutique where I was working. He never seemed to change and I recall we had a nice chat. Rest in peace, Mr. Evans. You were one of a kind. • My condolences to Anna and the entire family. John was a wonderful person and a great mentor. When he took over the Victoria Beach golf course we immediately became friends and with John's help he and I ran the Victoria Beach Men's golf tournament until he finally passed on the torch. We became great friends. I have some many memories. I am sure the VB golf gang will have a fitting salute to a man who made the VB course great. Heaven will have a great greens keeper. - Posted by: Ken Rowson (Friend) on: Jan 23, 2021

  • Many of us only knew John through the VB golf course. I'm sure he had many wonderful accomplishments through his entire life.......but, for us, his transformation of the golf course is a highlight we will always be grateful for! He started with the fifth hole and just kept plugging away, year after year, hole after hole......improving and changing and improving some more. To make that course into a regulation 9-hole layout was a major undertaking and he was certainly up to the task. We VB golfers are forever in his debt...and his enthusiasm and hard work will always be remembered and appreciated! Thanks, John!
