BARRY ARTHUR (ARTIE) PARKES
October 25, 1955 - January 22, 2021

To love and be loved is the greatest gift of all; and Barry was so dearly loved. It is with profound sadness and grieving hearts that we announce the passing of Barry Parkes.
Barry was the sixth of seven children of Cliff and Iris Parkes. He lived a happy childhood in a large, loving family where values were learned by example. He was proud to be in the Parkes clan with his band of brothers and sisters! He knew we were there for him, just as he was for us. He was a kind and loyal friend to all and was one of those people who'd literally give you the shirt off his back. The house on Oakview was always a hub of activity, with friends and neighbours visiting daily. Born and raised in East Kildonan, he spent his whole life in this great community. From hockey at Bronx Park to beers at the Curtis, Sals for a burger and a LOT of Gondola Pizza (he should have bought shares in that company!), Barry made many great friends in his life, with many good times shared.
On August 6, 2011 Barry married Kathy Bailey and was so happy to be a husband, as well as a father to his stepson Cody. Barry and Kathy had been friends for many years prior to marriage and Barry had been like a father to Cody since he was a little boy.
Barry was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Prince Edward Branch, for 44 years and proudly served as a member of the Colour Party from 2012 to 2017 during which time he held the position of Sergeant at Arms for two years. He was employed at E.H. Price for 44 years until his retirement in October 2020 at age 65. Barry enjoyed time at home (he purchased the house on Oakview in 2007) with his family, having a beer, watching sports (loyal fan of the Montreal Canadiens, Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburg Steelers), listening to rock n' roll, reading and relaxing.
Barry bravely faced life-altering health problems over the past two years with rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma in his lungs and, as of late, heart problems. His passing was hastened after contracting COVID-19 while hospitalized.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kathy, stepson Cody, siblings, Ron (Connie), Wes (Pat), Bill (Suzie), Mary Lynne (Tom Fischer), Brian (Bonnie) and Sandra (Darrell Tymchuk), sisters-in-law, Terri Bailey (Jimmy) and Gloria Smith, as well as many nieces and nephews. Barry was predeceased by his father Cliff, mother Iris, brother-in-law Tom Montgomery, and mother-in-law Verlie Bailey.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Barry's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Prince Edward Branch or to the Poppy Fund.

"A limb has fallen from the family tree,
That says grieve not for me,
Remember the best times,
the laughter, the song,
The good life I lived while I was strong."

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • So sad when I heard Artie passed. He was such a great guy. He welcomed everyone to his home, specifically his tiny bedroom. His walls covered in black light posters, we all squished into his room, found a place to sit on the floor and listened to albums. Alex Harvey Band will always remind me of him. Loved by all, he was kind, funny, generous, had a great work ethic, and had a wonderful family as well. I'm grateful to have known him. Rest easy my friend. - Posted by: Kim Marino (Zawidoski) (Friend) on: Feb 09, 2025

  • I worked with Artie at E.H. Price many moons ago. He was always a pleasure to work with and very helpful when I started with the company. My wife went to school with Cathy. My condolences to all of Artie's family and friends. - Posted by: Russ Pich (Co-workers) on: Feb 09, 2023

  • One of the best guys I’ve ever known. We had lots of good times early in life and I have many fond memories. Fishing, hunting, miniature golf, cruising to the dub, pool at Toppers, The Grove, playing caps, Risk, backgammon, chess, lots of partying and much, much more. We lost touch when I transferred to Edmonton, but I would think of those great days often. May you rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Roland Dilssner (Friend) on: Mar 23, 2021

  • I, like a lot of people, spent more than a few nights in Artie's room. Artie was a decent guy who always took care of his responsibilities. He had a good work ethic and I am sure he made a good father. I hadn't seen him in many years but I was saddened upon hearing of his failing health and of his passing. My condolences to his family - Posted by: Scott Miner (Friend) on: Feb 09, 2021

  • We are so very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts are with all of you. We used to live right across the street from the Parkes' so we have fond memories of playing with all of "the kids" growing up. Barry was always so nice. I used to be at their place often as they babysat me after school. I truly treasure all of those great memories growing up. Thinking of all of you.
