FREDRICK HORTA

With heavy hearts the Horta family announces the death of Fred on January 25, 2021, at the age of 58.
Fred is survived by his mother Nadia, brother Donnie (Katherine), nephew Matthew (Kelsey), his beloved dog Kona, as well as extended family and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his father Robert (Bob) Horta in 2018.
Born in Edmonton on October 11, 1962, Fred was raised in Winnipeg and worked in the construction trade throughout his adult life. He was friendly and talkative on the worksite, and took pride in a job well done. Fred warmly welcomed new workers by getting to know them, sharing his tools and providing gentle support. Friends fondly remember him chatting while he worked and how he always had a treat (or two) in his pocket for their dogs. Fred was a strong and hardworking man, but more importantly, he was kind, gentle and caring.
Throughout his life, Fred passionately pursued a wide range of interests including photography, gardening, health/wellness and spirituality. He loved to cycle, golf, exercise and care for his dogs, first Georgia, then his beloved Kona. Georgia and Kona provided many opportunities for Fred to strike up conversations with other dog lovers, many of whom became his close friends. People were drawn to his smile, his big heart and his friendly spirit.
The family would like to thank Fred's friends and co-workers for their kindness and support. Due to limitations on gathering, there will be no service. Arrangements in care of Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Fred's name to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to another charity of your choice.

  • My sincere condolences to the Horta family for your loss. Freddie was such a bright ray of sunshine for anyone lucky enough to know him. I first met Fred during football at Fort Garry, and whenever you went up against him you knew you were in for a battle!! But right after the game or the play he would have that warm smile on, that brought everyone back together. Rest in Peace Freddie...
