EDWARD MULARCHUK
May 19, 1940 - January 29, 2021

Dad was born in Toronto, Ontario and at a young age he and his family moved to Winnipeg. Dad attended Norquay and Mulvey School and Gordon Bell High School. On August 7, 1957, Dad joined the Army (Queens Own Rifles) as a Rifleman, and later transferred to the Canadian Provost Corp in Calgary. In August 1960 Dad received his Honourable Discharge and returned to Winnipeg and met and fell in love with his future wife, Anna. They were married on September 9, 1961, and during that time raised two great sons, Shane (Pamela) and Kenneth (Bonnie). After 49 years of a fantastic marriage, Mom passed away on September 6, 2010.
During this time Dad was employed as a guard at Headingley Gaol, three years later Dad joined the Assiniboia Police, which later became St. James-Assiniboia Police where Dad was promoted to the rank of Detective. After having amalgamated with the Winnipeg Police, Dad retired after 29 years.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Anna, his parents, Peter and Anne, and brother Bill (Bev). Dad is survived by his two sons, Shane (Pamela) and Kenneth (Bonnie), also his little buddy, grandson Joseph, and Hannah.

Mom and Dad are together again, forever.

The above words were written years ago by our father for his obituary. This is a testament to how thorough our Dad was, and how he did not wait to get tasks accomplished. Nothing was more important to Dad than his family, and Dad did all that he could for us during his life, and even in this time of grief.
Mom and Dad travelled extensively during the first years of their marriage, doing many road trips throughout America. Dad liked to tell the story of how they tried to time the birth of their first-born son Shane, to be born on a road trip while in California - perhaps sparking Shane's preference for warmer climates and moving to Australia. During the summer of 1968, Dad and his family travelled to Washington and New York, a few weeks later Kenneth was born prematurely. Kenneth inherited Dad's sharp mind and his academic achievements were a source of pride for our family, proudly displayed along with Dad's policing memorabilia. Trips included travelling East to Ontario and New York to visit family. Travelling to the west coast to see family, then on to Las Vegas and Disneyworld. As well as many visits to the Ituna/Yorkton area of Saskatchewan to be with family. There were other trips to locations such as Hawaii and Mexico, but the most cherished trips were to Australia to spend time with Shane and Pamela.
With his incredible memory and sense of humour, Dad loved sharing stories about family, travel, and working with the guys. At over 6'8" (Dad liked to say that he was 5'20" when people would ask him how tall he was), he was easy to spot holding court at Unicity Mall or having coffee at McDonalds with the crew or having lunch with friends and family. Dad was a lifelong Blue Bomber fan-refusing to answer the phone when the Andruchuk cousins would call him specifically during this time.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Edward's honour may be made to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • I started working with Ed after the Assiniboia & St. James police forces amalgamated. My first tour of duty with Ed had to be done using the older Ford from Assiniboia. It had a 'loose' front seat which had been fixed to allow for his height. He would tell me about his experiences, smoke plain end cigarettes (lit by an old flip lighter). Rarely missing was a portable radio playing Johnny Cash tunes. He was a good partner, friend and family man. He was highly respected by those who knew and worked with him. I learned of the passing (February 19th) and remain saddened at his passing. GOD Bless you Ed! - Posted by: Michael Altham (Former police partner) on: Feb 20, 2021

  • I was surprised and saddened to read of the passing of my cousin Ed. He was a great conversationalist and we kept in touch over the years with long telephone talks. Ed and I had a brief and lovely socially-distanced visit just a few months ago when he brought me some old photos of my father, Michael, that he felt I would enjoy. I will forever cherish that final visit. Ed was a good, kind man who easily expressed the love he had for his family and how much he missed his beloved Anna. With heartfelt sympathy, Joyce Moroz. - Posted by: Joyce Moroz (cousin) on: Feb 08, 2021

  • My Dad (Douglas Holmes) also was a Policeman at the St James Detachment at the same time. As a kid growing up we used to go to the station and visit quite often. I remember "Malarchuk" as everybody called him, all referred with last names, as a gentle giant with a low voice. Tall big guy but not scary at all, always a big smile Blanchard/Essery/Summers/Pope/Holmes/Malarchuk/Bryson/Parker/Bridgewater Best guys ever! Sorry for your loss Leanne Holmes (youngest Daughter of Douglas Holmes) - Posted by: Leanne Holmes (Worked with my dad @ St James Police) on: Feb 08, 2021

  • A big man with a big heart, I will miss running into Ed and shooting the breeze with him. It was always a pleasure to be around Ed. I had the honor of working in Division 12 when Ed was a Detective in the back office. Rest in Peace Big Guy. - Posted by: Doug Anderson (Friend, co worker) on: Feb 07, 2021

  • I first met Ed when I was very young in the 1960's, as he was one of my Brother's police partners. When I first met him I was amazed by his height as I had considered my Dad, who was also a policeman and was 6 foot 5 inches tall, to be one of the tallest individuals around. In 2009, Ed spotted me in a crowded room at a function we both attended and kept calling out kid, which he always called me when I was younger, until I realized he was calling for me. We had a lengthy conversation to catch up along with a lot of laughs about the old days. I regret that our paths did not cross more often. Ed was truly a gentle giant with a heart of gold and will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Richard Pope (Friend) on: Feb 07, 2021

  • I am heartbroken at the passing of Edward Mularchuck. He and I grew up in the West End of Winnipeg and attended Mulvey together and both joined the Queen’s Own Rifles in August 1957, he was in a rifle company an I was in support company. Unfortunately at 5’20” he had a habit of standing out and therefore was always “right marker” the CSM of Ed’s coy. Was of short stature and eventually had Ed taken off parade for making him look like a “peanut”. Ed was transferred to the Provost Corps where he finished his military time. I took my release from the Army at the same time and both of us headed for Winnipeg, Ed went to work at Headingly and I went back to school. I spent the year hanging around with ED, Anna (and another young Lady) then I ended up back in the Army. We met up many times in the following years and kept in touch with each other. I will miss you dearly my old friend, may Anna and you enjoy the Kingdom of Heaven now and forever. My sincere condolences to Shane, Ken and all extended family. Peace Be With You! - Posted by: David Gibson (Old friend) on: Feb 07, 2021

  • My deepest condolences to Ed's family. He was my long-time friend and neighbour. I will miss our talks and the jokes Ed would play on me as he drove by my house, often pulling into the driveway for a visit. Ed will never be forgotten. He was a good man with a big heart. Finally with Anne again, may he Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Sharon Bryant (Friend) on: Feb 07, 2021

  • I first met Ed when he was my dad's partner. I often bumped into him and Anne at Bomber games where we would sit and have a burger and a beer. More recently I heard about the retired cops coffee meetings at McDonalds so I began to attend. Ed was his usual jovial self with a wisecrack for everybody that sat down. My father had nothing but good things to say about Ed and as I got to know him, I could see why. Rest in peace buddy...you will be missed.. - Posted by: Sean McCreary (Friend) on: Feb 06, 2021

  • Ed was a great man to work with. Not only was he a big man he was truly a "gentle man" in every sense of the word. My condolences to his family. He will be missed - Posted by: Chris Lundgren (Friend and workmate) on: Feb 06, 2021

  • Ed worked on the same shift in the Vice Division for the years I was on the Drug squad. He was always highly humorous and although was on the Gambling Squad he was quick to lend his support to whatever else was going on in the division. A super nice man and so well liked and respected by everyone. Rest in Peace old friend. - Posted by: Jack Tinsley (Co-worker and friend) on: Feb 06, 2021
