KONSTANTINOS (DINO) KOSTIS

Born February 15, 1941, in Chrysoupoli, Greece, to Gregorios Kostis and Anastasia (Halkidis) and passed away on January 30, 2021, in Winnipeg.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Tatiana (Galatas) and Valentina (Simeonidis).
He is survived by three children, Karen Ann Tardiff (Shaylee and Samara), Tanya Lee Macchia (Gennaro, Dario and Abriella) and Gregory Athanasios Kostis (Rome and Larissa), and many nieces and nephews.
Dino immigrated to Canada from Greece in 1962 and completed his high school education at Gordon Bell High School. He made his way to Thompson, MB where he held a variety of jobs. He later moved back to Winnipeg and went to cosmetology school where he trained and later worked as a hair stylist for a couple of years. He met Doreen, they married and had a family. He started a career at CN Rail, overseeing dining operations as the Food and Beverage manager. He was promoted to menu planner from 1966 to 1976 for Transportation Services for Western Canada. This love for the hospitality industry saw him open, in 1976, his first of many restaurants -most notably Mr. Dino's Steakhouse on St. Anne's Road. In 1977, he received a Community Service Award from the City of Winnipeg, and later tried his hand in politics, running in the Provincial Election in 1981. He continued to work in the restaurant industry, that he loved, until he retired. Dino was known for his impeccable grooming and he was a meticulous dresser. Anyone who met him can tell you he had an outgoing personality, told racy jokes and boy, could he spin a tale! He enjoyed his flashy clothes, jewellery and cars, cigars, brandy, music and travel. He was quite an interesting character! He also enjoyed playing golf as a younger man and loved flowers and gardening in his later years.
The family would like to give our gratitude and thanks to the staff at Actionmarguerite- Tache Nursing Home at 185 Despins for the compassionate and excellent care they provided for Dino the past one and a half years.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 5 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Interment followed at Brookside Cemetery.

May your memory live eternal.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • We met Dino when we were dating in 1977. We regularly frequented Mr. Dino’s Steakhouse on St. Anne’s Rd. We always were greeted personally by Dino who always made sure all his customers needs were being met. We even had our own special waiter, Kenny. We still reminisce about those wonderful dinners and evenings spent there. It’s been a long time and in fact we’ve been married for 41 years now, but we still look back fondly on those memories at Mr. Dino’s. Our heartfelt condolences to the family. God bless! - Posted by: Ernest & Denise (Customer) on: Feb 26, 2021
