(DAN) BORDEN PHILLIP HUMNISKI
October 23, 1938 - December 25, 2020

Dan was born in Winnipeg, MB, the youngest of five children born to Basil and Tekla Humniski. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Vladimir and Joseph, and sister Mary Glover. He is survived by one brother, Deacon Victor (Mary) Humniski of Winnipeg; children: Darren (Shyra) Humniski, Nadine (Ahmed) Aljubori, and grandchildren: Kaden, Rocco and Summer Aljubori of Calgary.
Dan was educated at St. Nicholas School, and later as a teen entered the Basilian Seminary in Mundare, AB. He later took his profession vows in 1961, and was ordained as a priest in Toronto in May 1965.
Dan chose to leave the Basilian Order after several years and entered in the field of Social Services and Corrections for a 25 year career, eventually retiring in July 1999.
Dan worked as a lifeguard and Red Cross safety instructor and a leader and trainer with the Boy Scouts of Canada. Dan enjoyed fishing and camping. He also loved to sing and was gifted with a wonderful voice. He sang in a variety of choirs including the Richard Eaton Singers and Edmonton Swiss Men's Choir, as well as a part of a barbershop quartet. Dan also had a keen interest in genealogy and traced the Humniski family tree all the way back to a small village in Ukraine.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Grace Manor Nursing Home in Edmonton for their care and commitment to Dan over the past several years.
Cremation has taken place. Interment will be held at the Holy Family Cemetery in Winnipeg, once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. A Divine Liturgy in Dan's name took place on January 25, 2021 at the St. Nicholas Church in Winnipeg.
Donations in Dan's name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I was sorry to hear of Dan's passing. We became friends in the choir of the Ukrainian Musical Society of Alberta's 1994 Choir Directing Seminar and kept in touch, periodically, until 2006. I have added details to Dan's biography in an appendix of clergy that served in Britain, in my history of UGCC in Great Britain 1890-1970. Вічная пам'ять + - Posted by: Rev. • Dear Uncle Victor and Auntie Mary, I am sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. I remember meeting and seeing him several times growing up. He was kind and had a beautiful smile. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. With love, Pam. - Posted by: Pamela Chaves (Family Friend) on: Feb 13, 2021
