DOUGLAS JAMES LETT
August 24, 1952 - February 10, 2021

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Douglas James Lett.
Doug is survived by his wife Elly, children, Eric (Becky) and Andrea (Quinn), his grandchildren, Sidney, Henry and Olivia. Doug is also survived by his mother Delphine, brothers, Tom and Melvin (Raymonde) and sister Susan (John) and a large extended family.
Doug was born and raised in Lac La Biche, AB. Upon graduating high school, Doug moved to Edmonton to further his education. While there, he met his wife Elly and married in 1975. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Bank of Nova Scotia. He loved his job and had many roles including bank inspector, commercial credit and running the Central Auditing Unit. His staff loved him and many kept in touch even after they parted ways at work. He took ScotiaBank's values to heart and inspired his staff to support causes like Toy Mountain and many other charities.
Doug was a very active man – loved golfing at Kingswood, bowling and playing baseball and walking his dogs. He also loved nothing better than a good water fight with anyone who was willing. Doug and Elly travelled a lot to places like Italy, Cuba, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico, Las Vegas, etc. He also loved going home to Lac la Biche when he could.
Doug took an early retirement so we could continue our travels, sadly that was not to be as he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers. This painful and unforgiving disease rapidly took his spirit away from us and he spent the last few months in care between Seven Oaks, Lions Manor and the Victoria Hospital.
Doug quietly slipped away while at the Victoria Hospital on February 10, 2021.
The family would like to thank all of those who took good care of Doug through these very trying times.
Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Flowers are kindly declined. Donations can be made to Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

The battle is over. A good fight was fought. It's now time to rest.
Good night my sweet prince.

  • Doug was the first Scotiabanker I spoke to when I was applying for work at 19. It was at the Windsor Park branch and after helping me complete my application for employment, directed me to Portage and Kennedy where I was hired. We never did worked together, but many times over the years, when I had the opportunity, I'd thank him for seeing the promise in me. He was such a nice man and he will be so missed, I'm certain. My sincere condolences to his family. He was still so young and many Scotiabankers share in your grief. RIP Doug. - Posted by: Laurette Truszynski (Scotiabanker) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • I would like to extend my condolences to Doug’s family. I worked with Doug at Winnipeg Branch & CBC. Doug was a very good banker and always approached his responsibilities with the Banks best interest in mind at the same time respecting his staff and fellow workers. He was very well organized and was an asset to our Branch. I always appreciated his strong support. Was so very sorry to hear of his illness and premature passing. Rest in Peace Doug. - Posted by: Ralph Page (Co-worker at Scotiabank) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • I worked with Doug at BNS Main Branch Wpg.. Sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Loretta & Len Frankow Family (Former co-worker) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • In Oct. 1979 we moved to Fort McMurray for my husband's work and realized that I would also have to return to work. I walked into Scotiabank since I already had 7+ years experience. Doug did my interview for the new position of Mortgage Officer. I had no experience in that department but Doug told the manager that in 7 years with the Bank, surely she has heard the word mortgage which makes her the best candidate. Thanks to Doug, I was hired. Although we did not work directly together, the branch was small enough we all got to know each other very well. Gone far too young. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Yvonne R Wiebe (previous so-worker) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • To Elly, Eric, Andrea ... please accept our heart-felt condolences. As a friend and former colleague, we will miss Doug and there is no doubt, he will be greatly missed by many others. I first met Doug when I was assigned to the Audit Department based in the Prairie Region. Doug was not only a good friend but a mentor. We had crossed paths through our respective careers at Scotiabank on a number of occasions, and for those experiences, I will alway be grateful. "Doug ... may you rest-in-peace my good friend" . - Posted by: Rick and Andrea Yakabowich (Friend and Co-worker) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • We knew Doug from a variety of branches including Ft Mcmurray and other Alberta branches. We were lucky to spend some evenings with Elli and their kids as well in the 80’s. He was such a nice individual. So sad to hear about his passing. Sending our condolences to Elli and his family. - Posted by: Wilf and Barb Gray (Co worker) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • I met Doug at 7th & 7th, Calgary in 1983 within a month of my starting at BNS. He was the AMO and I was a Consumer Credit Trainee. They were in the midst of an inspection and I was asked to lend a hand investigating and responding to defects. Six months later I was the AMCC at Rundlehorn and Doug arrived to inspect us. Two years later Doug and I were appointed to the new Audit Team pilot project. Definitely an audit connection between us! Worked together for 3 years in Audit and visited every branch in southern AB and many others in the Prairies as well as the Caribbean. Also did the first ever audit of Lac la Biche with Doug and was honoured to have dinner with his parents during the week. Learned so much from Doug in those three years and had a ton of laughs along the way. Loved his often warped sense of humour, we lost a tremendous man this week. Deepest condolences to Elly, Eric, Andrea, family and friends, may your memories of Doug be as good as mine! - Posted by: Rod Dugan (friend & co-worker) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • I fondly remember Doug and had many interactions with him here in Alberta. He was a decent genuine person with a hearty laugh and a great sense of humour. How sad I am to see his passing. My condolences to all the Lett family. - Posted by: Ken Johnston (Bank colleague) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • Sincere condolences to Doug’s family. We worked together at Portage & Main at one point before he moved on to head up a new centralized accounting unit for the Bank. He had many friends at Scotiabank and was admired and respected for his many personal attributes and friendly soft spoken demeanour. - Posted by: Wayne Harden (Co-worker) on: Feb 13, 2021

  • Our deepest condolences to Elly, Eric & Andrea and their families. Our friendship started when I met Doug on a Scotiabank work assignment in the late 80's. Doug was living in Alberta at the time but shortly after he accepted a work transfer and moved his family to Winnipeg. Doug was a great friend both at work and in our social lives. Doug was very active in Scotiabank social, sports and fundraising events in which his friendly demeaner, volunteerism and sense of humor earned him a great many friends at work and in his community. Doug's passing leaves a big hole in our hearts and we will miss him greatly. - Posted by: Guy & Judy Comeault (Friend & co-worker) on: Feb 13, 2021
