MARIE DOLORES (SQUIRES) SCHROEDER (nee PLANTZ)
January 14, 1938 - February 14, 2021

It is with great sadness and peace in our hearts on February 14, 2021, Marie D. Schroeder was ushered into the presence of Jesus Christ after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 83 years.

Mom was born on January 14, 1938 at Hackensack, MN to Ralph and Eleanora Plantz. Mom grew up around Ten Mile Lake until the family moved to Canada in 1945. They moved to Camper, MB where her dad was an itinerant preacher plus trapper to provide for the family. In 1956, while living in the Camper area, she met Allan Squires of nearby Mulvihill. They were married in 1957 and soon moved to Winnipeg, where Dad worked. Mom was the proud mother of three boys and one daughter, Ray, Brad, Fred and Karen.
Mom was definitely a people person and greatly enjoyed meeting people in her various roles, and kept contact with many friends and family over the years. Both Mom and Dad created many lasting memories with various family sides, with closest to Uncle Gomer and Auntie Dot, Uncle Art and Auntie Dodie, Uncle Wayne and Auntie Lorraine.
Just as Mom and Dad were preparing to retire to Mulvihill, after 35 years of marriage, dad passed away from cancer. After living many years in Winnipeg she moved out to Mulvihill, then Eriksdale, where the last couple years she and Don lived in Teulon. As Mom loved to travel, she and Don took bus and river tours, plus lots of driving including going to Gospel Music festivals in Manitoba. They toured parts of Europe and USA, plus enjoyed East and West coasts of Canada.
Mom will be deeply missed by her husband of 15 years, Don Schroeder; children, Ray (Ramona), Brad (Ruth), Fred (Heather) and daughter Karen (Rob); grandchildren, Chris, Mandy, Susan, Kristine, Jonathon, Julianna, Allan, Laura, Nick and Sabrina; plus great-grandchildren, Alexis, Austin, Jack, Bryson, Sarah and Ella. Each of us has treasured memories. She will also be missed by brothers, Gomer, Alfred, Rocky; sisters, Seeta, Tilly, Vera; plus many other in-laws from different family groups, nephews and nieces.
Marie was predeceased by her husband Allan in 1992; her parents, Ralph and Eleanora in 2004; brothers-in-law, Arthur, Vic, John; and sister-in law Eileen.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date (due to COVID-19 restrictions), with her son Brad Squires officiating.
Special thanks to the staff at the Selkirk Hospital including Dr. Kinsley and team, Health Sciences Ward GH5, Dr. Lipschitz, assistant Chantalle, Nurse Practitioner Adrian Sawatzky at Teulon, including the staff at Gimli Hospital for making her journey easier in the past few months.
Mom always enjoyed the window visits at Gimli Hospital, and especially appreciated the walk-by of 24 family members who were able to make it at Gimli Hospital on December 20th.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 8200, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4W5, or the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • This was so shocking to see. Marie was a volunteer here in Eriksdale for many years and a very good friend of my family. Marie was a kind person and could be a little spit fire when needed to be. She will be missed . Please accept my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Charlotte Lindell (Friend ) on: Feb 22, 2021

  • Our sincere condolences to Marie's Family on her passing. I hadn't realized all the various family inter-connections at the time when I came back to live & work in Eriksdale (as the Home Care Case Coordinator & PHN from 1986-1992, after being away from "home" since 1975, to go away to University & then work up north & in Wpg) & was a neighbour to Ruth & Brad & their family & Wayne & Lorraine & their family & are friends with Keith & Debbie & John & Irene. My Mom was Claire (Jundt) Smith & I remember going with my cousins, Bernice & Bob Jundt, to visit Gomar Plantz's home "just down the road from their place" a couple of times when we were kids, although I don't remember John per se until meeting him & Irene (who is a 2nd cousin to Jeff!) many years later after Jeff & I were married! They had had a Gospel Concert one weekend at the Broad Valley Park near Fisher Branch many years ago & I wonder if Marie was in attendance?! May God give you His Grace & Peace during this season of grief & mourning & His assurance that we WILL see our loved ones in the Lord, who've gone on before us, again! With love & condolences, Cindy (Smith) & Jeff Plett - Posted by: Cindy (Smith) & Jeff Plett (friends of Family) on: Feb 20, 2021

  • I met Marie many many years ago when they lived on Moray. Lots of visits to the house and to the old house at Mulvihill. She has had such a long journey with ill health and I'm saddened but relieved she is finally at peace. My love and prayers go out to Ray, Brad, Fred and my friend Karen. - Posted by: Susan Gustafson (Jack) (family friend) on: Feb 20, 2021
