I have fond memories of Vernon back in primary school, especially sitting beside him in Grade 7. He was a whiz at math and was the go-to person for anyone who struggled. Vernon was a very kind, fair and decent person. I was very sad to hear of Vernon's passing. Condolences to his wife Darlene and family. - Posted by: Jean (classmate ) on: Mar 09, 2021

I have known Vern since I helped teach him how to curl so many years ago. Of course, I knew him to see him in his father's store and was so happy to see that he carried on giving us the great care in the pharmacy that we received from his father. I am so glad that Darlene came to be a blessing in his life! Over the years, Vern helped me in a great many ways as a pharmacist, and was a great friend and supporter. I felt that I had a very close personal friendship with Vern. I know I did! I could trust and confide in him. But when I talk with others about Vern, I find that they also felt a very close and personal friendship with Vern. What an amazing Gift! To be able to have an entire community of close personal friends! He is missed by so many and will continue to be missed! - Posted by: JOYCE WYRCHOWNY (Friend) on: Mar 09, 2021

My best memories of Vern go back to curling when we were in high school. I don't know if I can say whether we won more games than we lost, but, win or lose, anyone who has experienced it will remember Vern's smile and infectious laughter. Win or lose, we had fun! That was quite a few decades ago, but he is still gone way too early! My recent knowledge of Vern is through my mother, Joyce, who has benefitted greatly from his advice, friendship, and caring. From everything mom has shared with me, it's pretty obvious that Vern will be missed by the community as a whole. More so, it's obvious that Vern will remembered fondly and personally by each individual he has touched. I haven't really known Vern in decades, and I am personally grateful for the love and care he has shown my mother, and for that he will be missed. - Posted by: Neil Wyrchowny (Curling buddies in high school) on: Mar 08, 2021

I am so sad to hear of Vern's passing. We had so many great times travelling in our younger years. Vern was always up for an adventure, sliding into the airport at the last minute with a hastily thrown together suitcase, but ready to go! I've always cherished those memories and will continue to do so. The world has truly lost a great man. - Posted by: Dawn Dola-Jenney (Friend) on: Mar 08, 2021

Vern was an exceptional person, a caring pharmacist and a great friend. Our university years together helped to establish those long-lasting friendships that get us through life’s challenges. We will miss Vern’s smile, his laugh and willingness to lend a hand and help in any way he could. Vern was a one-in-a-million person that we feel very privileged to have known and to be able to call our friend. Our deepest condolences are extended to Darlene and all of Vern's family. - Posted by: Susan Lessard-Friesen and Rick Friesen (Friends) on: Mar 06, 2021

I have such wonderful memories of working with Vern (for 15 years) and fun times shared going to staff X-mas parties at Vern and Darlene’s house. His annual staff curling/cancer fundraising event was always a blast and his generous matching of funds was outstanding! Our heartfelt condolences go out to Darlene and family. Vern will be greatly missed by everyone. BIG HUGS and love. Take care. Linda and Bruce Huewan - Posted by: Linda Huewan (Former co-worker) on: Mar 06, 2021

I met Vern in grade 10 in 1976. We were close friends in high school and the four years at university, car pooling every day between Stonewall and Winnipeg. He was a best friend. I remember Vern for his sense of humour. He had a deep laugh, which would come from deep in his core and make his whole body shake, especially his shoulders, as his eyes would tear up. He really looked you deeply in the eyes when you talked with him and you knew he was really listening. He was so caring and thoughtful. He had a ‘gung-ho‘ attitude and was always a good sport. Even when I asked him to do something together that he did not want to do, he would be smiling. But he would at the same time raise his eyebrows slightly and I learned to recognize that meant no. I remember how proud he was of the new stereo system he bought and had me over to hear Phil Collins songs. I remember his grin growing from ear to ear as he kept cranking up the volume and I could feel my chest vibrating deeply. It was the best stereo I have heard. Vern, you were the best guy, a true friend. You did so much for me and I am very grateful!! I am listening to Phil Collins songs tonight and reliving all of the great memories: your laughter; studying hard together; those Pharmacy university student social events; the road trips; curling; and more. To Darlene and the Appleyard family, I wish you peace. I hope you will find some comfort in knowing how loved Vern was and what a positive impact and lasting impression he had on so many people. He was so well liked and respected. Please accept my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Brad Barrie (Friend) on: Mar 03, 2021

My deepest condolences to Darlene and all Vern’s family and friends. May your happy memories of Vern comfort you during this difficult time. I will always remember Vern with a smile on his face, possibly a drink I his hand, always willing to share a laugh or a good story. One of easiest to get along with people I have ever met and one of my best buddies in grade school, high school and early university. Adult responsibilities has made it more difficult to keep in touch but I’ll always have my memories of Vern during our youth. Rest In Peace, good friend. - Posted by: Brad De Ryck (Friend) on: Mar 03, 2021

I'm so thankful to have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Vern. He was a man of warmth and character; a true gentleman. This epitaph by Robert Burns seems so apt: An honest man here lies at rest, As e'er God with his image blest; The friend of man, the friend of truth, The friend of age and guide of youth: Few hearts like his, with virtue warm'd, Few heads with knowledge so inform'd: If there's another world, he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this. - Posted by: Michelle Smye (Colleague) on: Mar 03, 2021

I cannot recall a time in Vern's presence that there was not a smile on his face and a laugh at the ready. There was many a bottle which miraculously disappeared, many a meal during a time when people talked, argued and laughed and there was not a cell phone in sight! It was my privilege to share a part of his life and I will miss him. Until we meet again my friend. - Posted by: Janet McCutchon (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2021
