SCOTT NEWSOM
May 29, 1993 - March 6, 2013
In March of 2012, when Scott was a student at Bodenseehof Bible School in Germany, he wrote a letter to his future self, as an assignment. Sadly, he died a year later, just before his letter was sent back to him. Scott knew he would be struggling with depression, as he did every winter. This is some of his advice to himself. In this isolating time of pandemic, when so many are struggling, these are wise and comforting words:
". . . this is a time of year when SAD is at its worst. Remember that depression is not who you are. Remember that the way you see things in the darkness is a radical distortion of the truth. The truth is in the light. Remember also that it is an opportunity. In brokenness, you will learn far more than when you feel yourself to be whole. And as far as who you are, remember that God made you unique, with a specific purpose, and that like all people, you have strengths and weaknesses. Self-labelling will get you nowhere. You are loved and you have been used to love people. God has used you in great ways and will continue to do so. Comparing yourself to others will get you nowhere. Abiding in Christ's amazing love for you will."
A favourite verse of Scott's: "He heals the broken-hearted and bandages up their wounds. He counts the stars and calls them all by name." Ps 147:3-4
Scott, we who know you love you and miss you. Mum, Dad, Paul, Dave, Judith, Cora and Edmund look forward to your hugs in Heaven.
