  • Getting older - I periodically take a look at the obits - I was saddened to hear of the passing of 'Bob'...its ironic - as I just recently was wondering how he was doing now - this is certainly not the answer I was looking for. Bob was a man with a high degree of integrity and was proud to serve the citizens of Altona. I fondly remember going with him to chaperone the WC Miller Collegiate Grads while on a cruise on the Paddlewheel boat in Winnipeg. Our first foray was when the cruise was going to be cancelled unless there was a Police presence - he gladly accepted so that the function would continue - that carried on for many years. Almost everyone in Altona knew or knew of Bob and his reputation of being fair but firm which earned him much respect. I always enjoyed attending to functions at the Mart home - Lillian is a spectacular cook and baker and made everyone feel 'at home' along with son Chris who was always very friendly. Sincere condolences to all of you. Know that Bob led a good life and will be remembered by all that knew him. - Posted by: Robert (Bob) Lechow (former Altona Police Constable) on: Mar 10, 2021

  • I was about 13 or 14 years old and walking home from red carpet restaurant where I was a dishwasher. On my way home after 11 PM a group of boys harassed and threatened me. I remember clearly Chief Mart asking me some questions and then confronting these bullies. It never happened again. Thank you sir for making our community a safe place. I will never forget your booming voice which demanded respect. Thank you sir. - Posted by: Leonard Hildebrant (Altona citizen. ) on: Mar 10, 2021

  • The Altona Police Service would like to express our sincere condolences to the Mart Family. You would be proud to know that at times there are still "Bob Mart" stories told around the coffee table; all good I might add. Chief Mart was dedicated to Public Safety in any jurisdiction he policed. We thank him for his service and May he Rest in Peace as his duty is now done... • I am very saddened to learn of Bob's passing on March 2, 2021. I have known Bob for 40 years. I first met Bob in 1982 when he was the Chief of Police with the Altona Police Department. Bob gave me my first opportunity to become a Police Officer with Altona Police in 1982 and years later recommended me when I transferred to another Municipal Police Service. After 28 years of Municipal Policing I retired and I will forever be grateful to Bob for that opportunity to have a start in Policing. Bob was well known as a very principled and tough Police Officer. Bob always demonstrated the highest degree of integrity and was one of the most honest people I have ever met. His loyalty to his profession and the people he worked with was unshakable. Bob was well known as a very tough and courageous person and always told it “ like it was” without any sugar coating. Underneath that gruff exterior was a very kind, caring and generous person who would do anything he could to help others and make them feel safe and secure. Bob got involved in many Charities and community activities as that was his way to give back to the community. I remember that there were many dangerous police calls that I attended with Bob over the years I was with Altona Police and I saw first hand how Bob was able to bring the situation under control and resolve the matter safely. Bob was always there to back up his officers in all situations land made sure that any call we attended that he was “ always the first one in the door”. That leadership resonated with me throughout my whole career. Over the years I lost touch with Bob but fortunately I was glad to reconnect with him a few years ago. We enjoyed coffee and dinners together and spent hours talking about the old times in Altona. Bob was a very private person and it was an honour that he remembered me over the years and followed my career. If I had to pick out one of the many things I admired about Bob it was the intense love he had for his wife and his family. Bob, you will never know the effect you have had on the countless people you have met over the years and the countless lives you have saved and made better. You are a true hero. You will be missed. My sincere condolences to to Lillian and the whole family. Bob, Rest In Peace my friend. I shall miss you and you will always be remembered Your friend Norman and Roseline Carter - Posted by: Norman Carter (Friend and Co worker) on: Mar 07, 2021

  • Well hello Lily, Al, Holly, Curtis, Brad and Chris! It’s been a very long while. I am sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. I remember his strong looming presence as Altona’s police chief but quickly learned he was pretty soft when I was invited to your home. Please accept my condolences and prayers.
