ABU BAKAR (TOM) MOHAMMED

Surrounded by his family, Tom passed away peacefully on February 26, 2021, at the age of 80.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marie; brothers, sister and sisters-in-law, Lena, Ousman and Jeanne, Shirley, Farouk and Sherry; son José, daughter Shelliza, son-in-law Devin; grandchildren, Aidan, Zak, Sebastian and Nalani, and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Bobby.
Tom was born in St. Joseph, Trinidad and immigrated to Winnipeg in 1962 to study at United College and the University of Winnipeg. He earned his B.A. in 1967. In Winnipeg, he met Marie and they married in 1969.
Tom was an instructor and mentor at Red River Community College in the Department of Communications, where he engaged students with his passion for writing and public speaking. He was involved in many aspects of the College over his 31 years of service, including as Department Head.
His other passion in Winnipeg was for horse racing and he and his friends enjoyed many a race at the Assiniboia Downs.
Tom retired from Red River in 1998 and moved with Marie to the West Coast; he cherished his many years in the Vancouver area connecting with friends and family.
He and Marie also continued to travel widely and spent time visiting with their four grandchildren. He filled his retirement years with endless reading of the news, stocks, business and politics. Cooking was another of his retirement enjoyments and he was an avid gardener.
But most of all, Tom enjoyed his time spent in discussion, with good conversation and good food with his many, many friends and family the world over. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service was held at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta, BC on March 7, 2021.
