STELLA GAIL CARRUTHERS
March 21, 1917 - March 14, 2021

"Gail" Carruthers, a centenarian, passed peacefully at her home, one week shy of her 104th birthday.
Gail was born in the family home in Lord Roberts, the daughter of Stella (Abbey) and Perry Carruthers. Filled with the love of a family of five children, this house that would be her home for most of her life. Growing up in Winnipeg, Gail attended Lord Roberts School and Kelvin High School before going to University of Manitoba, where she graduated in 1938 with a degree in Home Economics.
After working a couple of years for the provincial government teaching homemaking in small towns in Manitoba, Gail moved to Hamilton where she worked as a nutritionist in food services at McMaster University until her retirement. She had a reputation among friends and family of being a great hostess, with a knack for presenting and preparing wonderful meals.
Her love of music was evident where ever she went, from playing the violin in one of the first Western Canada Youth Orchestras while attending Kelvin High School, to singing in the Senior's Glee Club, part of the Golden Rule Seniors at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre. Often, during visits with friends, she would start singing, just for the love it.
Gail was predeceased by her parents, Perry and Stella Carruthers, her sisters, Carlie, Margaret and Geraldine, and her brother Donald, a Second World War casualty. She leaves to mourn a niece, Lynne Hughes of Pointe Claire, Quebec and a nephew, Donald Hughes of North Bay, ON. She will be lovingly remembered by her dear friends, the De Pape family. She leaves behind a legacy of honesty, gentile dignity and generosity.
Sincere thanks go to the caring staff of Shaftsbury Park Retirement Residence.
At Gail's request, there will be no funeral or remembrance service. Interment is to take place at the family plot in Painesville, Ohio.
