RUDOLF WIESER
June 23, 1926 (Mürzzuschlag, Austria) -
March 21, 2021 (Winnipeg, Manitoba)
Rudi was predeceased by his wife Susan, and survived by his two sons Robert and Ralph, his five grandchildren, Ellen, Marc, Maxime, Grace and Joseph, and his three great-grandchildren, Julius, Anna Rose and Iris.
Rudi was born in the town of Mürzzuschlag in Styria, Austria in 1926. His young life and education were deeply marked by political upheaval and the outbreak of war. Conscripted into the army at 18, he was captured by American forces in France and interned as a prisoner of war until 1946. Following the war, Rudi obtained an immigration visa, and sailed for Halifax by steamer in 1951, travelling by train to Winnipeg.
Drawn in by her beautiful voice, Rudi met the love of his life, Susan Kroeker, at a singing party in her father's Winnipeg home. Rudi and Susan were married in 1955, and soon had two children. Summers at Falcon Lake paved the way to the first family cottage at Wallace Lake in 1969. A second cottage followed, after a catastrophic forest fire in 1987, and this is where Rudi and Susan spent the idyllic golden years of their retirement.
Rudi never shied away from a debate: His strong personality and sarcastic humour were legendary. He was a flirt and a tease and a daredevil, and he loved a good laugh. But, these characteristics belied a profound depth of feeling, of warmth, of fierce loyalty, and of unconditional love. His perseverance and ability not only to survive but to thrive in the face of impressive obstacles throughout his life, while always looking after his family and friends, will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
When he wasn't busy building, repairing and tinkering, Rudi was often content to sit for hours at a time admiring the constant, yet ever-changing view from his deck overlooking the lake. This is where we will always remember him, with a glass of homemade wine and a sense of wonder at his own good fortune, nodding along to Louis Armstrong's classic song, "What a Wonderful World."

We are sorry to hear of your father's passing, Rob and Ralph. What a fine tribute you have captured in this obituary...a life lived...full of challenges, blessings, and purpose. We wish the family peace and strength as you move forward in Rudi's absence, never forgetting the best memories and times you had together. Rob, you were always there for your father, at the cabin, on the water in your sailboat...your love for each other always present. You are in our thoughts. Friends and neighbors at Wallace, Brenda and Kelly Ward. - Posted by: Brenda Ward (friend) on: Apr 25, 2021

Sorry to hear the passing of your dad. Your obit did a great job of portraying your dad. Worked with your dad for 30 years and had a lively push pull relationship. Remember my first visit to Ethelbert and my introduction to his wine. It got me started on my own. We never failed to exchange Christmas cards to see how are families were doing. I will always remember Mr Wieser (and Mrs Wieser ...can’t think of one without the other) with extreme fondness. Such lovely people, warm and hospitable, who were part of my family’s Wallace Lake close friends. I am deeply sorry to hear of Mr Wieser’s passing, and my heart goes out to Rob, Ralph, Ellen, Marc and their families. - Posted by: Mary-Lou Harding (Family friend) on: Mar 31, 2021

I have thoughts of Rudi when I was 13 growing up without a father being a school friend of Ralph being invited into their home and a few weekends at Falcon Lake. Rudi I still think was the toughest male influence I ever grew up with he taught me to box spear fish hang on to a Volkswagen running board while he drove. Thanks for all Rudi, condolences to Rob and Ralph. - Posted by: Ron walker (Friend of rob and ralph) on: Mar 28, 2021

Together, with the love of his life, they made a wonderful life together and now, perhaps they are together again. Farewell Onkel Rudi. - Posted by: Ingrid Kroeker (Neice) on: Mar 28, 2021

My sincere condolences to Rudi's family. I got to know Rudi at the Rendezvous Club which was held weekly at the Riverview Health Centre. During some wonderful conversations we discovered that my pen pal in Austria and Rudi grew up together, went to school together, and were good friends. At those meetings Rudi always greeted me with the old fashioned handshake. Rest in peace Rudi. Inge Osterwald - March 27 2021 - Posted by: Inge Osterwald (friend) on: Mar 28, 2021
