VERA HORECHKO

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vera Horechko into the hands of God, at the age of 96, on March 23, 2021. After a long and full life, baba peacefully began her eternal life.
Vera was predeceased by her husband, Anton in 1995. Left to cherish a lifetime of fond memories is her son, Orest (Jeanette). Missing her baba will be Vera's granddaughter Tamara (Frederick), as well as her great-grandchildren, Violet and Dorothy, who were special to Vera's heart.
Vera was born in Sumy, Ukraine. During the Second World War she lived and worked in Germany at a work camp. She immigrated to Canada in 1948 arriving straight to Winnipeg, and remained a North Ender all her life. Anton and Vera were married in February of 1949.
She was employed first at St. Boniface Hospital and moved on to Perth's Limited for another 30 years. Her strong work ethic helped contribute opportunities for the family. In retirement, the many years of hard work by Vera and Anton were rewarded with the means to enjoy 28 annual February vacations in Hawaii.
Vera was a long-time parishioner of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church. She was active in her church, keeping spirituality as a focus for guiding her life. The smells of her wonderful cooking and baking greeted all who came to her home on Selkirk Avenue and later, on Sinclair Street. When not working in the kitchen, she took great pride in planting and growing her tomatoes and garlic. Her passion for life and unconditional love were an inspiration to us all. Her passing into the hands of God removes her from our physical presence, but not from our hearts or our minds. She is reunited with her beloved Anton, whom she has now joined in peace.
Special thanks to Baba's special St. Nicholas family: Rose, Theresa, Pat and Ollie, who, along with family, helped Baba stay in her own home until she was 94. If we missed someone, you know who you are - and thank you! Special thanks also go out to Kildonan House, as well as all the health care professionals and providers at Holy Family Nursing Home who worked so graciously and compassionately to make Baba feel welcome and loved. Lastly, we would like to thank the palliative care staff at Grace Hospital (3 N and S) who made Baba comfortable in her last few days.
Prayers and funeral were held Friday, March 26, 2021, at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church officiated by Father Gabriel.
Flowers are gratefully declined; a donation to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in her name would be an honour.

  • Our deepest condolences to Orest and family. Vera was a sweet lady and wonderful neighbour for many years. I remember how much she loved our dog Maggie that we used to have. She would always save ham bones for her, and I would often see her pull up a chair on the other side of the fence and talk to her. She wanted us to put in a doggie door in the fence so that Maggie could come and see her whenever she wanted. She often passed treats over the fence to the kids or tomatoes from her garden and she would offer me tips on growing my own garden. She is sadly missed.
