DONALD R. J. MACKEY

Sadly, on March 21, 2021, Donald R. J. Mackey passed away peacefully at 88, due to complications from a stroke.
He will be lovingly remembered by family and friends: his wife of 66 years, Beverley Hinds Mackey, his daughter, Shari Mackey; his sister Violet Cangemi (Frank), brothers-in-law, Reid (Diane), Don (Beryl) and Jack McQuarrie (Brenda); nieces and nephews, and special family friend, Laurie Nyquest.
He was predeceased by his son, Donald Kent Mackey; brothers, Gerald (Marilyn), Clifford (Lucy) and Raymond (Norma); sister Brenda, and good friend, Reny Bianchi.
Don was born in Timmins, Ontario and joined the military for 15 years. He was with Canada Manpower until his retirement. Don kept busy with volunteer work, such as the Military Cadets, Manitoba Metis Federation, where he worked for the recognition of Sgt. Tommy Prince, and was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Friends may remember him from his Briar Patch Rabbitry, which provided pet therapy to many seniors' homes and grade schools.
Donald was honoured with the Order of Manitoba, Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal, a tree planted at Assiniboine Park as part of the Lieutenant Governor's Tree Project, and a Winnipeg Police Service Certificate of Appreciation.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and health care workers at Grace Hospital for their kindness.
Donations may be made in his name to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice.

  • Sending love, hugs, and healing thoughts and prayers to Shari and Auntie Bev at this time of loss. I will always remeber the bunnies when I think of the uncle we called Mackey Don, and the many happy Christmas eves hosted by the Mackey home for the family. I would also like to acknowledge his love and devotion to his wife and children that can be admired by all of us. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Ainslie Ceicko (Great niece) on: Mar 28, 2021
