WALTER KAPKO

With much sadness and regret the family of Walter Kapko announces his passing surrounded by family at his home in Sherwood Park, Alberta on Saturday, March 27, 2021, 12 days after his 75th birthday.
Walter was born in Winnipeg and lived his younger years in Transcona until marrying Lorraine. Together Walter and Lorraine had three children, Tanya, Tyler and Bryan. Walter worked for CNR and, in 1993, was transferred to Edmonton where he worked until his retirement in 2000. After retiring he still enjoyed his weekly lunches with his fellow CN retirees, the CN 7. He always looked forward to the weekly visits of family. He also enjoyed travelling, golfing, watching hockey on TV and going to the Oiler's home games.
Walter is survived by his loving family, wife Lorraine, daughter Tanya (Dylan), Tyler (Lori), Bryan (Cassi) and grandchildren, Julia and Nicholas, also many relatives in Canada and US.
The family is grateful for the kind neighbours' prayers, words of encouragement, help and meals. Walter passed away peacefully and we are thankful his suffering is over.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, they can make donations to Canadian Cancer Society.
Friends and family can view our slideshow of Walter on our memorial website:

  • Dear Lorraine & Family, Walter was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. When our son was growing up, he became best friends with Tyler and Lorraine & Walter kindly welcomed our son into their family home on a regular basis! May fond memories of happier times ease the sorrow of Walter's beloved family. With Sincere Sympathy, Cathy & Ray Chapelsky - Posted by: Cathy & Ray Chapelsky (Friends) on: Apr 11, 2021

  • I was deeply saddened in reading of Walter's passing. As I sat and drifted into our early years in Transcona, fond memories became visual. Vivid interactions of Walter, his cousin, Ray and I playing baseball, ball hockey, ice hockey and football from the time I was thirteen to age eighteen/nineteen. We were inseparable. We attended Blue Bomber games, went to movies, took in all nite drive-in theatres and thoroughly enjoyed our young boyhood and adulthood experiences. Then as fate would have it, I left Transcona and our friendship and interaction was severed. But what will not be erased or erroded are the wonderful and enjoyable times that Walter left with me. Please accept my sincerest condolences. In Thoughts and Prayers, Frankie De Marchi - Posted by: Frankie De Marchi (Friend) on: Apr 10, 2021

  • As a child and young boy, I always enjoyed our family visits to Transcona from California, Uncle Walter was like an older brother I never had. He introduced me to hockey and we went to a game by bus on every visit. I will always cherish those memories from Transcona. As an adult, it was always fun visiting with Walter, Lorraine and the kids during our visits to Canada or during their visits to California. I/we will all miss Uncle Walter and pray for God's comfort and peace upon Lorraine and their family. - Posted by: Rick and Nancy Kapko and family (Nephew) on: Apr 10, 2021
