NELLIE WINZINOWICH
April 26, 1927 - April 9, 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nellie Winzinowich on April 9, 2021, aged 93, at St. Norbert Personal Care Home.
She is survived by her daughters, Donna (Robert) Weeler and Joanne Winzinowich; as well as her two grandchildren, Anthony (Becca) and Heather. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Adolph, and by her parents, Tony and Tekla (Teenie) Posaluko.
Mom was born an only child in the tiny farming village of Thalberg, Manitoba. At a young age, she left to work in Winnipeg, but returned to assist our grandparents on the farm. She met our Dad (Adolph) at a Stead community event. He was the local schoolteacher who was dressed up as Santa Claus. After they married they moved to Beausejour to live and raise their family.
Mom and Dad were an inseparable couple. Sundays were spent going for leisurely drives or visiting relatives. They enjoyed spending time at their condo at Winnipeg Beach. They frequently travelled the world, visiting places like Hawaii, Mexico, Europe, Cuba, Barbados, Morocco, and the Canary Islands, as well as a number of ocean cruises.
Mom was exceptionally proud of her Ukrainian heritage, always eager to learn more about the culture. Joanne surprised her by taking her on a trip to Ukraine in 1999. She had the opportunity to visit the ancestral villages where her parents were born. She often reminisced about this trip of a lifetime. She was an excellent Ukrainian cook. Tony and Heather always say Granny made the best perogies ever.
Reading, gardening, crocheting, bird watching, and spoiling her cats and grandchildren were just some of her interests. In recent years, she started writing her memoirs. She occupied herself with sukodu and word puzzles until her health rapidly declined. She loved meeting new people and could strike up conversations with complete strangers. She had an amazing memory and was often consulted for information regarding our family history.
Mom was very proud of the accomplishments of her daughters and grandkids. Christmas concerts, band concerts, recitals and graduations were must attend events for her.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at the St. Norbert Personal Care Home. Their kindness, exceptional care and compassion for our Mother and Granny during the past two years have meant the world to us. They are more than caregivers, Mom considered them her friends and family.
A private family funeral service has been held with interment in St. Mary Roman Catholic Parish Cemetery in Beausejour, Manitoba.
Memorial donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to Oseredok (Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre) 184 Alexander Ave., Winnipeg, MB.

  • My condolences to you and your family, Joanne. I think back to how your face lit up when you spoke of your mom. I know you will truly miss her. You must have received your love of travel from your parents. I see they have been on many interesting trips, as have you. She will be waiting for you, till you meet again. - Posted by: Louise Dahle (Friend of Joanne) on: Apr 17, 2021

  • My deepest condolences to Joanne and family on Nellie‚Äôs passing. She was a very dear and sweet lady. I very much enjoyed caring for her and the many chats we had about our love of cats. May your special memories comfort you. God Bless. - Posted by: Doreen Mihalus (Former caregiver) on: Apr 16, 2021

  • Sending my condolences to Nellie's family and loved ones. I had the pleasure of facilitating recreation programs and having many conversations with Nellie. She always had a smile on her face especially when she saw me "Desi". Nellie would always participate in word games. I would try and have words that were challenging but she always figured out the word. She also loved her exercise and she was the best at doing the air bicycle kicks and definitely out beat me on that. I just found her Christmas card that she gave me and the front says "Peace". May Nellie rest in peace. She will never be forgotten and will always have a special place in my heart. <3 - Posted by: Desiree (Therapeutic Recreation at St Norbert PCH) on: Apr 13, 2021

  • Deepest sympathies to Donna, Bob, Tony, Heather and Joanne. My sympathies on the loss of your mother, mother-in law, and grandma. My mom (Else Beger) and I visited Nellie many times when she lived in Beausejour. We really enjoyed our visits. It was always nice to stop in and visit her also when she lived in Winnipeg. I was looking forward to a window visit on her upcoming birthday this year. Tony and Heather were always the talk of our conversations as she was very proud of her 2 grandchildren and their achievements. Nellie and my mom can reunite with each other now and carry on their conversations and tea parties in heaven. Rest in Peace - Posted by: lori stelmaschuk (relative) on: Apr 13, 2021
