ALICE ROSE BOSSENMAIER
April 14, 1924 - April 13, 2021

Mrs. Alice Rose Bossenmaier (nee Zugschwert) passed away peacefully, one day shy of her 97th birthday.
Alice will be dearly missed by her children: Greta (Bill Michalopulos) and daughters, Leah and Julia; Steven (Judy) Bossenmaier and daughter Haelin; her son-in-law Glenn Herzog and sons, Clayton, Rod and Evan; great-grandchildren, Naomi, Brynne, Axel and Blaire; and her 'little' brother John Zugschwert of Middleburg, Virginia, USA.
Alice was predeceased by her parents, John and Rose Zugschwert; husband Eugene, daughter Mary Jean, and brother Edward Zugschwert.
Alice was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and enjoyed a wonderful childhood. At the age of 18, Alice being the eldest child, took on the role as primary provider for the family with the passing of her father. In 1953 Alice wed Eugene Bossenmaier (whom she had met in kindergarten) and they remained happily married until Gene's passing in 1999. After residing in Wyoming and South Dakota they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1958 where they raised their family. Alice spent many years volunteering and working at the Museum of Man and Nature. She truly had a passion for nature and the love of family, qualities she passed on to her children and grandchildren. In 1988 Gene and Alice moved to Mayview and then to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Alice's last move was to Ottawa, Ontario, close to her daughter Greta and family.
Alice was a "sweetheart". She was elegant with a beautiful spirit and a gentle, caring and appreciative demeanor. She loved to read mystery novels, cook/bake, do gardening, crosswords, play cards, paint, knit, crochet, walk in the woods, ski and play Jeopardy, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She remarked that she had been blessed with a beautiful life.
The family is grateful for the friendship and care she received at Windsor Park Manor over the past 10 years and to her friend Kimber.
In Alice's memory, we are respecting her wish for no visitation or funeral service.

  • I was honoured to know Alice both as a colleague at the Manitoba Museum and as a dear friend. She was indeed an elegant, kind, gentle, talented and beautiful woman. In the many years we worked together I never heard one harsh or critical word leave her lips. My sincere sympathy to Greta, Steven and the rest of her family. May wonderful memories be of comfort to them all as they mourn her passing. - Posted by: Diane Skalenda (Former colleague and friend) on: Apr 18, 2021
