(nee ENNS)

On Saturday, April 10, 2021, Erika passed away peacefully at her home in Costa Mesa, CA, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 68 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Karl and Tina Enns.
Erika spent almost 52 years of her life in Winnipeg. She moved to California in 2003 to marry the love of her life, Rick Bartsma.
Erika will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Julie (Warren) Loupin, Sherry (Spencer) Schellenberg of Winnipeg and Michelle (Evan) Williams of Newport Beach, CA; seven grandchildren, Cody, Shenise, Eden, Lily, Evan, Archer and Jack; two brothers, one sister, and the rest of her loving family and friends.
Erika worked at Great West Life Assurance Company for many years before moving to California. Her main joy in life was her children and grandchildren. She came back to Winnipeg often to visit them and looked forward to their visits to California.
Anyone who ever met Erika would remember her wonderful hospitality, warm personality and always welcoming spirit. She was known for Sunday dinners where anyone was welcome and there was always more than enough food. Erika loved living by the ocean, kayaking with Rick and hanging out with her grandsons on Balboa Island. She enjoyed volunteering at church and developed close relationships there. She was her families' greatest cheerleader, prayer warrior and friend.
The family wishes to thank all the Hospice staff and friends who came over to sit with Erika, bring food and comfort the family in her last days with us.
A private interment will take place with immediate family and a Celebration of Life is being planned in the next two to three weeks at Mariner's Church in Irvine, CA, which will be live streamed.
In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Siloam Mission at

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Erika could always be heard on the phone with one of her 3 girls trying to get them off to school and trying to get at least one of them to get along with the other 2. She was proud of her girls and I know it must have been hard to move to California but she was so happy when she met Rick and came back to work to tell us all about him. We were all so happy when she flashed her engagement ring at us. Her Candy Pizza was always a treat and we all have her recipe and will remember her always. Rest In Peace Erika, you are out of pain and have left a wonderful legacy for your children and grandchildren. Condolences to Rick, Julie, Sherry, Michelle and your families. There are no words that will make you feel better but she will always be near and in your hearts. - Posted by: Sharon Carter (Friend from Great-West Life) on: Apr 19, 2021

  • Erika came into our lives in the very early 90s when I met her working at Great-West Life. We became instant friends and had many fun times together. When Erika married Rick and moved to CA we kept our friendship going through the many years, staying with them for two weeks one year on holidays. We got together with them many times after on their visits to Winnipeg, the last one being the Christmas of 2019 when they rented a house for a month. Erika, as many of you know, was a force of nature; always on fast-forward as I often said. She was a warm, friendly, loving person with a positive out-look on life and we had many a good laughs together. She fought her Cancer courageously and with all her strength with a great attitude and hardly ever a complaint right up until the very end. Having her whole family visit for an extended period one last time recently was a real blessing for everyone involved. Johnny and I have lost a wonderful friend and our condolences go out to Rick, Julie, Sherry, Michelle and their families at this very sad time. Sincerely Johnny and Sharon Ikonen ❤️ - Posted by: Sharon and John Ikonen (Friends from Winnipeg) on: Apr 17, 2021

  • Erika had such a warm spirit and a way of engaging people in conversation. Though I didn’t know her well, nor have I spent much time with her, her strong and godly character lives on through her children and grandchildren. May the Lord be with you as you grieve. - Posted by: Tanna Melendez (My friend’s mom) on: Apr 17, 2021
