DOUGLAS HONEYMAN
Doug was born in Winnipeg to Lila and Bert Honeyman, KC. In his first year of university, he played on seven competitive sports teams, including a stint with the Maple Leafs' farm team. He also became an RCAF pilot before he graduated from McGill University in Chemical Engineering.
Upon his return to Winnipeg, he became a pioneer in motor oil recycling and waste oil management, and ran his successful business with his wonderful wife, June.
Inspired by his father, a former City Councilman, Doug served as a Municipal Alderman for two terms, and as a Norberry Community Club President.
Doug spent every summer of his first 85 years at Lake of the Woods, Minaki, Ontario, where he created a ton of camping and cottage adventures. His autumn bird hunting trips with his buddies were also legendary for their fun. Doug loved those friendships and their camaraderie.
Doug and June began their residency in North Vancouver in 1986. Here, Doug pursued his passion for tennis, playing up to five times a week into his 94th year!
Doug was a real character (the stories will never die!), honest as they come, and so generous to others. He was always excited to spend time with his children, and all their friends were always welcomed with warmth, laughter and a big Honeyman hug. He definitely lived his full and rich life on his own terms!
Doug will be greatly missed by his daughter Darby (Dave), his daughter Laurie (Steffan), his son David (Yi), as well as his grandchildren, all his extended family, and his friends. He was predeceased by June, his beloved wife of 63 years (2012) and his beautiful daughter, Barbara (2000).
Doug always knew the power of a simple thank you. And so, in the spirit of Doug, we send a big thank you to his former neighbours at McNair Place, to the open hearted staff at Inglewood Care Centre, and a very special thank you to his extraordinary Care Companion of four years, Trish.
Dad, we thank YOU!
Your Love will follow us everywhere!

I just read this. My condolences to Darby, whom I got to know in the summer of 1979. I got to know your dad more in the summer of 1981 when I was staying on my own at my cottage across the bay. He was a good guy. - Posted by: David R. Henderson (Friend) on: Nov 30, 2024

We send our deepest sympathies to the Honeyman family. (And our apologies - as we have just heard of Doug's passing.) Doug was a dear friend of my parent's, For many years, Doug was a constant in our lives - in the fall for hunting trips with Dad, which included stays at the house in Regina - and in the spring for fishing trips to Nelson Island on Lac La Ronge. Mom (Bev Gyles) stayed in contact with Doug after my Dad's passing. Their phone conversations were always filled with laughter and great memories. And thankfully they were even able to 'lunch' a few times when Mom was out in Vancouver visiting. His hugs and sense of humor are warmly remembered. Rest in peace Doug. - Posted by: Alison Gyles (Friend) on: Aug 13, 2021

I remember as a Doug who lived life on his terms and inspired others, myself included, to do the same. A life well lived. My condolences to the Honeyman family. Chris Tweel, Toronto - Posted by: Chris Tweel (Friend) on: Apr 28, 2021

Our condolences to Darby and family. I did not know Doug except through his children but from stories I formed the impression of a man who was keenly interested in others and the world around him and lived with a warm commitment to his family and community. The Honeyman home was always generously open to friends - some epic parties played out there on the banks of the Red River. And you can only admire a man who enjoyed a game of tennis into his nineties. That's evidence of a lust for life. His story made me feel grateful for his 97 years of being Doug Honeyman. - Posted by: Ian Gillies (Friend) on: Apr 26, 2021

I met Doug on the tennis courts at Minaki Lodge in the early 80's and he deemed me good enough to play with his friends: Al Fredericks, Vince Horbay, Al Lauder, Jim Eastwood, and a few others. We played in highly competitive games for the next twenty summers. He would phone even on rainy mornings and in his deep voice say,"It's clearing in the west." I loved the man and his competitive spark. Those were my happiest memories of playing tennis. I'm sorry that I won't have a chance to play him again. The other strange coincidence I discovered when Doug and I chatted after tennis was the fact that his dad, Bert, was my grandfather's best friend. My grandfather, Fred Warriner was in politics for many years (Mayor of Winnipeg in 1937). Doug gave me old newspaper clippings of my grandfather and his family. I still have them. - Posted by: Jock Warriner (Tennis competitor) on: Apr 24, 2021

We wish the Honeyman Family our very sincere wishes as they celebrate the patriarch of their family. Doug and June were such wonderful friends with our parents Colleen and Vincent Horbay - many happy memories and years together at Minaki and on the tennis court.
