1952 - 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a truly special woman, mother, stepmother, grandmother and friend, Jean Yvonne Hart-Kangas.
Jean was the driving force behind so much in her life, her family and her community. A strong woman who loved a good challenge and putting together the plan to overcome it, but at her core was an unrivalled belief that we could all be better. Be it sitting on her back deck overlooking the Red River or on her patio in Arizona, Jean never looked at the world how it was, but more so how it could be. This outlook was likely what led her to a career in education. From St. Vital School Division, to the Norwood School Board to Kangas & Associates with her beloved husband Roger, her life was simply about trying to make others better - whether they realized it or not. Jean was a self-proclaimed graduate of The School of Life, often sharing insight from a past experience along her journey.
Jean's life changed in 2015 with the sudden passing of the love of her life, Roger Kangas. As she would often say, they were a team. Their views and approaches may have been different, often highlighted by a "healthy" debate around the dining room table, but in the end, their love for each other always prevailed.
Over the last number of years, Jean spent much of her time lending an ear or offering insight to one of her kids, a close friend or neighbour while continuing to enjoy retirement with her two dogs, spending time in Arizona or meticulously manicuring her yard in St. Vital, before being diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2020. Till the very end, Jean was determined that this was simply another challenge that needed to be, and would be overcome.
Jean's legacy will live on through her three children, Ryan Hart (Reverly), Ryan Kangas, Rachel Darnely (David); her seven grandchildren, Camryn, Holden, Abigail, Emelia, Jacob, Breann, and Cole; her extended family and many longtime friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean's name to Palliative Care at Riverview Health Centre or CancerCare Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Ryan I am so sorry for the many losses you have experienced in a few short years. Your mother and I met when we both were in the Miss Blue Bomber contest in 1969. We were actually roommates for a short time. I have several photos from the contest that if you do not have I would gladly reproduce and send them to you. Again, my sincere sympathy. - Posted by: Adele Deegan Irving (Old friend) on: May 05, 2021

  • To Ryan H, Ryan K. and Rachel. As happens with the loss of a truly special long time friend my present sadness is eased by remembrances of my conversations with Jean following the shocking loss of Roger. Those two truly wrote their own love story. From early beginnings in Norwood to their home on the Red River theirs was a life of adventure, with enthusiasm. From improving the St. Vital School Division to forging their own business they were inseparable. With Roger's Alberta background no wonder they chose Arizona as their vacation property. Foremost in the minds of each of them was their love and concern for each of you. I am hoping you have the same photo I have of them dressed in cowboy garb as Roy Rogers and Dale Evans wearing the biggest smiles possible. Jean missed Roger. I know they are together again, smiling. God Bless with love and prayers to all and thank you for allowing me to be a small part of their story - Posted by: Sandy MacIver (long time friend) on: May 01, 2021

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this sad time. Jean was an old St. Boniface High school friend and we shared lots of fun times together. She will be missed. • You were a lovely, kind lady Jean. I always looked for you when driving by... to see if you were sitting out front, watching everyone driving by. I will miss seeing you. God speed. You’re now back with Roger and at peace. Your neighbours, The Snells ❤️ - Posted by: Allison and Terry Snell (Neighbour) on: Apr 24, 2021

  • I will always have fond memories of my friend Jean. I so enjoyed visiting Roger and Jean on Victoria Crecent on many occasions. Time spent there meant a little work and a little play. A perfect day. After Roger's passing, Ryan K. and I had a spring tradition of going and helping Jean set up the deck furniture and gazebo. During these visits Jean would always generously make us lunch and we would discuss future projects over a beer. A smart lady who was caring and collaborative. Great qualities. Gonna miss you Jean. - Posted by: Shannon Penner (Friend) on: Apr 24, 2021

  • To the Hart & Kangas families.... Our sincere condolences from the Turner Family - Posted by: The Turners (Friends of the family) on: Apr 24, 2021

  • John and I would like to send our condolences to the family. Jean will certainly be missed. Whenever I texted her, she would text back I’ll be in touch as soon as I feel better. She seemed to have a positive outlook on her future. John and I enjoyed many visits on her deck and and on her patio in Tucson. Every setting she put together was so peaceful and beautiful. She should have been a designer. She was the ultimate hostess, making everyone feel welcome. We will certainly miss her. - Posted by: Sandy Chambers and John Young (Friends) on: Apr 24, 2021
