It is with great sorrow that our family announces the passing of Helen Himick (nee Gulash) on April 28, 2021. Helen was a devoted wife and mother whose family was the focus of her life; her grandchildren meant the world to her.
Helen is survived by her sister Marjorie Zavislake; four daughters, Diane (Robert Novakowski), Judith (Michael Fedorchuk), Beverly (Eric Johnson) and Darlene (Brian Wirvin); four grandchildren, Kristine, Stefanie, Michael and Jack; brother-in-law Pat Kerdil; sister-in-law Anne Brasko, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Julian in 1991; parents, Stefan and Anna Gulash and sisters, Camelia (Lezubski), Anne (Kytaychuk) and Rose (Kerdil).
Helen was born in Old Kildonan and grew up with her four sisters on a family farm close to what is now the corner of Leila and McPhillips. She loved sports, especially baseball and track and field. Train rides to Winnipeg Beach, a hot dog at the Half Moon and visiting Kildonan Park were highlights of the summer.
Helen married Julian in 1956 and they settled in Transcona where they raised their family. Helen would live in Transcona until just a few years ago. She was a lover of dogs, and cherished her two West Highland White Terriers, Gaelin and Muffin. She loved gardening and tending to her flowers and vegetables in her back yard.
For years Helen was a member of the Catholic Women's League and volunteered at her church, St. Joseph the Worker, and she canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She enjoyed socializing at any event and especially loved card and bingo games. She and Julian were devoted football fans, were Blue Bomber season pass holders and supported the Winnipeg Hawkeyes Football organization. She enjoyed many years working in the Winnipeg Free Press Circulation Department.
Helen loved travelling and exploring new places. With her daughters she made trips throughout the United States and Europe, making two trips to Slovakia to trace her family roots.
Helen will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring, and fun-loving person, with a great sense of humour and a love of laughter. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to extend thanks and appreciation for the compassionate care provided by the staff at Fred Douglas Lodge, especially the Oak Unit. Our gratitude cannot be measured, nor put in words today.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Helen, donations can be made to the Helen Himick Memorial Scholarship through the Seven Oaks Education Foundation. Helen's memorial scholarship supports high school graduates furthering their studies in early childhood education.
Loved and remembered by your family. Rest in peace alongside Juno, the love of your life.
