NORMAN COLL JOSEPH MCDONALD

Norman Coll Joseph McDonald passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 2, 2021, at Deer Lodge Centre.
Dad was born March 24, 1925. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Teresa, son Donald, parents, Donald and Margaret, as well as sisters, Mary, Margaret and Shirley.
Left to celebrate and remember his long, outstanding life are his sons, Michael (Alison), Gerard (Theresa) and John (Sue); grandchildren, Katherine (Dan), Jacqueline (James), Brandon (Emile), Scott, Andrew (Chloe), Amy (Brandon), Cole (Emma), great-grandchildren, Emersyn, Austin, Owen and baby Beckett, brother-in-law Les Goddard, cousin Mary Teresa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad attended St. Edwards School before moving on to attend St. Paul's College which was located on Ellice Avenue at that time. As with many lads of his era, he went from playing Juvenile hockey for St. Paul's in 1942 to serving on HMCS Burlington during the Second World War.
Dad returned home and began a 43 year career with C.P.R. where he became an Engineer. During this time he met and married Teresa McGavock where together they bought a home and raised four boys. Mom and Dad lived in West Kildonan in the same home for over 60 years. They welcomed many new neighbours into their home. Nanny and papa's home was a place you got to re-charge, you were met with simple hospitality. You knew you were welcome, would be fed and listen to many stories or be entertained by Nanny playing the piano.
Dad made an impact on so many lives. He taught all his boys how to catch and throw a ball, as well as to how to skate (well maybe not Michael!). More importantly he taught us how to be a true gentleman, respectful of everyone. He also showed us the importance of a sense of humour. We could not have had a better role model.
Papa loved to play games with his great-grandchildren and his grandchildren when they were younger. He would put his glasses on the back of his head then ask the children to help him find them. We'd hear screams from them that they were on the back of his head. "But I can't see them I don't have my glasses on". And on and on it would go! Unfortunately later in years he really did lose them and his dentures!
In the last year Papa's mind and health started to tire. It was then that he was moved into Deer Lodge Centre.
His family wishes to acknowledge and thank Tower 4 Nursing Station and all the support staff for their excellent, professional care and companionship provided to Norman. You made the final chapter of Dad's earthly journey easier for all of us.
His family would also like to thank Veteran Affairs for their outstanding support of Dad.
A celebration of Papa's life will be held Monday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church.
Due to Covid restrictions it will be immediate family only.
