HELEN KROEKER
(nee THIESSEN)

We are mourning the loss of our dear Mother, Helen Kroeker (nee Thiessen), who was promoted to glory Sunday, April 11, 2021. She passed away quietly in St. Boniface Hospital, as her son Brian held her hand. Helen had been hospitalized after a fall at home, and following a lifetime of productive activity, spent her last months in care at Donwood Manor, spending much of that time in lonely isolation due to the ongoing pandemic.
Born in Rosenfeld, MB February 1, 1929 to Margaretha (Loewen) and David Thiessen, she was schooled in Rosenfeld. At her father's insistence she withdrew from school after completing the eighth grade. Growing up in Rosenfeld, she worked at childcare, homemaking and waitressing. As a teenage field labourer during the sugarbeet harvest, her intelligence and ability was immediately recognized by the field boss who promoted her to Timekeeper/Scale Clerk. On October 30, 1948, she married William, son of Jacob and Elisabeth Kroeker and the couple moved to Winnipeg which they made their home.
As a housewife and mother, Mom also worked as an office cleaner, and then banquet manager, restaurant manager, and for many years office manager for the Billy Graham Association in Winnipeg. She was blessed with a servant's heart, and she made it her business to serve and care for those she loved, close family, extended family, friends, and even neighbours. William and Helen dedicated themselves to Christian service in the churches they attended. They were founding members of River East Mennonite Brethren Church and Eastwood Mennonite Brethren Church, helped plant the McIvor Mennonite Brethren Church, and actively supported MCC missions in Winnipeg.
Helen was predeceased by William, her beloved husband of 70 years; her parents; two sisters, Susan and Margaret; four brothers, John, David, Abram and Henry; and a great-grandchild, Sedena.
She is survived by three children, Robert, Margaret and Brian; 10 grandchildren, Melanie, Jeremy, Alison, Jesse, Amelia, David, Stacey, Benjamin, Kathleen and Matthew; 20 great-grandchildren, Taylour, Parker, Mikayla, Alexis, Liam, Danika, Mason, Rain, Noa, Silas, Kaylee, Malcom, Kamrynn, Gregory, Marshall, Luxton, Matthew, Francis, Martigan, Anna; and two great-great-grandchildren, Noah and Gabriel.
Helen was laid to rest next to William in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens Saturday, April 18, 2021. Family members attended the graveside, although numbers were limited due to current restrictions. God willing, a Celebration of Life will be arranged for later in the year.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • When I was younger I always loved going to my great-grandparents, it was like an escape from reality and I was happy and safe, great-grandma and great-grandpa always made me feel warm and safe, they used to ask about my interests and they would ask if I need anything to try and pursue my interests, and I told them just a note book for lyrics and stuff, they asked if I wanted a mic to practice I told them I couldn't because I live in a rental unit and not my own house. I remember staying at the house with grandma and grandpa for a weekend, they took me out for ice cream, McDonald's and then took me to a park it was really fun, I miss them both:/ rest in peace great-grandma Helen I love you❤️ - Posted by: Kyle (Great grandson) on: Aug 05, 2021

  • My Mom and Dad were very good friends of Helen and Bill. When I moved to Manitoba from Ontario they took me in. Helen was a gentle spirit with a huge heart! She was generous and kind. She was a wonderful prayer warrior and was the one who taught me the importance of prayer. - Posted by: Cheryl Klassen Peters (Friend) on: May 12, 2021

  • When I prepared this announcement for publication, I mistakenly referred to Mom's church as Eastwood Mennonite Brethren. It should have said Eastview Community Church. I apologize for my error. - Posted by: Robert William Kroeker (Son) on: May 08, 2021
