October 26, 1932 - May 5, 2021

Peacefully on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at the age of 88, Herb fell asleep in death at home, surrounded by family.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Diane (nee Whitebread), of 64 years, daughters, Lori (Gilbert) and Heather, son Kevin (Teresa), grandchildren, Tashina (Matteo), Timothy and Anthony.
Herb is survived by his siblings Sheila, Grant, Ross and Nancy. He was predeceased by his parents, Lena and Morice, siblings, Bernice, Valdea, Robert, Donna, Bruce and James. He also leaves to mourn brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Herb was born in Winnipeg and grew up in the Charleswood area. As a youth he enjoyed working on the family farm, playing hockey, baseball and later on became an avid golfer. He graduated from Chapman School in 1950 where he met his wife, Diane. They were married on September 29, 1956. Herb worked as a brakeman and then a conductor for CNR from 1952 to 1989.
Although he enjoyed his job, he accepted early retirement to pursue another one of his passions, teaching others about his God, Jehovah, and the wonderful hope for the future found in His Word, the Bible. The promise of one day welcoming back our dead loved ones from the grave, to enjoy life forever on earth restored to a beautiful paradise, as God had originally purposed, brought great joy and comfort to Herb and to many he talked to. (Psalm 37: 10,11,29; Acts 24:15).
There will be a memorial talk for Herb, presented on ZOOM, June 5, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. CDT. All those interested in attending are welcome to send an email to in order to receive the passcode.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Herb will truly be missed. I had the privilege of getting to know Herb back in the 90s. He was always a joy to be around. He loved people. He loved to laugh. Just a genuine person. My sincere condolences to the family. It is so hard to see our loved ones die. No one is really ever prepared for it. Wishing you much strength from Jehovah during the hard time of loss. • I grew up in Charleswood with the Bannatynes. I went to school with Donna, Sheila and with Herb's sister-in-law, Marlene Whitebread. Such a great family, everyone loved them. I remember Herbie & Donna being crowned Mr & Miss Winnipeg or Manitoba, back in the day. My blessings to all the family and will keep you in my prayers. Hugs from Rosalie Larcombe. - Posted by: Rosalie larcombe (childhood friend and school mate) on: May 20, 2021

  • I first met Herb when I moved to Charleswood from Elmwood back in 1993. Herb was such a loving, caring person and truly exemplified true Christian love as one of Jehovah's faithful servants. Unfortunately, I am no longer associated with the group, but have not forgotten the doctrine of truth and firmly believe in the resurrection hope that Herb strongly entertained. I still hold fond memories of talking with Herb and being uplifted by kind and warm concerns. He was a true man of God. I offer my sincere condolences to Herb's family, associates and friends for the loss of his presence. I know he is sadly missed. - Posted by: Joseph Brown (Former Charleswood JW associate) on: May 16, 2021

  • I knew Herb for only a brief time when I moved to Winnipeg. I appreciated his help in service very much before I moved onto Altona. A wonderful Brother. My condolences to you, Diane and your family. - Posted by: Myra Wistoski (Friend) on: May 16, 2021

  • My thoughts are with the family at this time. Great to hear the family were at his side when he died. Enjoyed Herb's sense of humour. His comments at the pioneer meetings were meaningful and encouraging. He always knew what club to use when the elders got together for discussion. Look forward to his smiling face in the days ahead.
