BERYL MAE LUMSDEN
Survived by her sister Mary Barker, son Brock (Nicci), daughter Barbara Wells (Steve), granddaughters, Stephanie and Sarah Wells, and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.S.
Mum was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1927, the youngest of five children (Rae, Mel, Mary, Jim and Beryl) to Hazel and Harry Rankin. Mum always held her mother, Hazel Rankin, in great love and respect. Hazel Rankin raised her children with love, dedication, resilience, strong faith, and a sense of humour. Mum attended Gordon Bell Senior Secondary School (class of '44), and Normal School to become a primary school teacher. She often spoke fondly of her friendships and the fun she had with the young people's group at Greenwood Church. Mum moved to Vancouver in the 1950s, pioneering one of the first Kindergartens in the city. She married Russ Lumsden, in 1958. Mum was a staunch believer in a good education, happy to support her children and grandchildren in earning various university degrees. Mum followed Barb and Steve to White Rock, BC in 1996. She was a devoted, nurturing, generous Grandma to her two granddaughters. Mum was active in bridge and bible study groups and a voracious reader. She loved travel, crosswords, her garden, walks along the beach, and family vacations in the Gulf Islands.
We all feel a tremendous sense of respect, love, and gratitude to our Mum and the support she's been for us throughout our lives. Mum wrote, "I lived a long life full of blessings. The Lord has been with me and led me my entire life. My biggest blessing in life has been my family and my granddaughters. They have brought me so much joy. Remember the good times we had together."
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society or the Arthritis Society are welcome.
