I witnessed Mr Schwartz give my also late cousin Stewart John McLean 14 years for a home invasion style Robbery. It's the way Mr. Schwartz delivered his sentence is what was fascinating. He took several steps and explained why he took them. He had high respect for First Nations who changed their lives in spite of the disadvantages they faced. My cousin had used his background as an excuse. Being First Nations desent myself, I was more in agreement with Mr. Schwartz. It was on September 24, 1996 that I witnessed Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench Justice Mr. Sydney Schwartz used the available legal precedent to sentence a violent home invader to 14 years in the Penitentiary with no parole set at half under section 743.6. I learned a lot of law that day. Mr. Schwartz inspired me to study law. I knew many of his colleagues, some who faced myself in my years committing crimes. I never had anger towards the law. I am glad it was it was there. Peace Sydney. - Posted by: Gordon A Fiddler (Friend) on: Oct 31, 2022

I remember Sid when he was a partner at Walsh Micah and I was a student. Sid was always there as a mentor giving out advice and time. Sid was great company and kind to everyone no matter their position at the Firm. Sincerest condolences to Sharon and all his family - Posted by: Will Hechter (Friend) on: Sep 20, 2021

A giant in my life. His wisdom permeated our conversations. Spent many hours with he and Sharon over a fine glass of Scotch. He drank the best, and always shared his passion and friendship. Our experiences together were interesting, engaging and meaningful. I miss his being terribly. My sincere condolences to Sharon, his children and their families. He was heavily invested in their lives and spoke of them often. Particularly his daughter and her pursuit of law. I miss you dear Sidney. May you Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Zelig Alec Katz (Client first, friend to his date of passing. Syd was a giant in my life and we spent special times t) on: May 29, 2021

His loss will be missed. I was his letter carrier, about 14 years ago. It seemed he would wait for me most days. He had a knack to chat me up on many subjects. One of my memories is we would chat about France and my plans to winter there when I retire. He gave me sage advice. We go each winter to France and I think of him every time we board the aircraft. Never spoke down to me. Upon my last day on my route he hunted me down to give me a gift of two bottles of French Wine. My sympathy to his family and friends. - Posted by: Bruce Tascona (Letter Carrier) on: May 22, 2021

In the 1990’s, while working at St. Boniface Hospital, I was privileged to receive very good counsel and great, ongoing support from Mr. Justice Schwartz. He was a Member of the Board of Directors of St. Boniface Hospital and Chairman of the Quality Care Committee of the Board, and I was the Quality Assurance Coordinator and staff resource person to the Committee. Justice Schwartz was always so generous with his time, and he really pushed me to think fully and deeply about my work. His commitment to St.B was exemplary and I was always so impressed with his fluency in French, which he worked at continuously. My sincere condolences to his family on the loss of this very good man. - Posted by: Karen Howell (Former St.B.staff support to Justice Schwartz) on: May 22, 2021
