EGON ULRICH
April 12, 1941 - May 13, 2021

On May 13, 2021 God called Egon Ulrich home to be with his Lord and Saviour.
He is survived by his loving wife Carol (nee Tiede/Lepholtz); his son Leonard; son Brian (Leanne), grandchildren, Emily, Samantha, Luke; daughter Susan (Steve) Nachtigall, grandchildren, Tyson, Tessa, Tanner; daughter Lori (Kevin) Nachtigall, grandchildren, Ryan, Leah, Trevor; brothers, Hans (Annemarie) and Fritz (Dagmar); sister-in-law Irmgard Ulrich. He was predeceased by his first wife Lina (nee Kelbert) in 1987, brother Manfred and sister-in-law Ingrid, and brother George.
Egon was born in Zeinicke, Germany, the youngest of five sons born to Fritz and Ella Ulrich. In 1953 the family immigrated to Canada, finally settling in Winnipeg. Following graduation from Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, Egon enjoyed a full teaching career, having taught at Arthur Day School, Murdock MacKay Collegiate and Springfield Collegiate in Oakbank, MB. He also enjoyed many years of photography, woodworking, and his sales business in boats and vehicles.
Egon's favourite activity was spending time at the family cottage at Lake Nutimik. Family and friends will treasure many happy memories of all the good times we were able to enjoy there.
Egon accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour earlier in his life. His personal relationship with Jesus was most important in his life. He was a faithful and active member of Rowandale Baptist Church where he served in many capacities such as leading Boys Brigade, teaching Sunday School and serving on the church council.
Following a stroke in February 2016, he resided at the Maples Personal Care Home until June of 2018, after which he moved to Donwood Manor Personal Care Home where he lived until the time of his death. The family would like to thank all of the staff for their wonderful care over the years.
Words cannot describe how Egon will be missed by his wife, children, and especially his grandchildren, all who were blessed by the time they had with him.
Donations may be made in Egon's memory to "Camp Nutimik Foundation", Box 35040 RPO Henderson, Winnipeg, MB R2K 4J9, or online at campnutimik.com. Please specify that your donation is in memory of Egon Ulrich.
Viewing from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28, 2021, by appointment only, with opportunity to greet the family. Please call Friends Funeral Service to arrange an appointment.
The family will have a private graveside service and interment at Sunnyside Cemetery in the RM of Springfield.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I was saddened to hear of Mr. Ulrich's passing. He was a wonderful teacher (who had to tolerate my abysmal attempts at trying to learn math in his class) and a better person. His impersonation of a rock singer on stage always brings a smile to my face. Mr. Ulrich was well respected by students and colleagues alike. We pray that God will comfort y'all as you go through life without this good man. - Posted by: Craig Kennedy (Former student) on: Jun 01, 2021

  • I often think of my teachers and when I saw Mr. Ulrich had passed it made me so sad. He was a great teacher, always kind and patient and I truly enjoyed his classes in fact he was my homeroom teacher in Arthur Day Room 5. I have fond memories of a very nice man. My condolences go out to his family. Lori King (former student) - Posted by: Lori King (Former student ) on: May 30, 2021

  • Condolences to Mr Ulrich’s family. He was my math teacher in my final year of school at SCI in 1979. He was a calm yet stern (when needed) caring teacher with a sense of humour that made being in his class enjoyable. RIP Mr Ulrich - Posted by: Patricia Rosmus (Former student) on: May 23, 2021

  • OMG I was just thinking about this teacher and telling my grandkids about him. He was the best, I struggled with math in high school 1976, he when out of his way to teach me, with patience. I am truly grateful for all he did, I went on to be a Nurse. Thank you Mr Ulrich for being a great teacher and truly caring about your students ❤. My prayers go out to his family and friends sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Deborah Goetz (Rettaler) (Student) on: May 23, 2021

  • My heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Mr. Ulrich had such a sly smile and sense of humor, and his incredible mind was something amazing! I still remember how he started every grade 12 Math class with "Mental Math" - how he'd verbally string a long sequence of numbers together and suddenly ask for an answer... He certainly had an impact! - Posted by: Scott Chabluk (Former Student) on: May 23, 2021

  • Mr. Ulrich was my grade 12 math teacher at SCI and I loved being in his class. He challenged his students to be their best and connected with them with his wit and subtle sense of humour.
