JOSIP (JOSEPH) VASAREVIC
Joseph was born September 8, 1939 to the late Dragan Vasarevic and Marija (Kolak) Vasarevic in the small village of Podvinje, Croatia. He later spent his youth in Sl. Pozega, Croatia. Joseph came to Canada in 1958. First landing in Quebec, he found work in Ontario and eventually made his way to Manitoba where he met Joyce (nee Strymbiski), his loving wife. They married November 18, 1961 in Sundown, Manitoba and had four children.
Joseph's career was meat cutting. He worked for Canada Packers and Schneider's Meats where he retired after 40 something years. During his retirement, Joseph made the best homemade garlic rings and smokies. Both of which were flavourful and packed full of garlic!
He enjoyed camping, fishing, socializing with friends, and travelling. He made his way back to Croatia many times to visit family, as well as, travelling to Cuba and Barbados.
Dad's life wasn't always easy, but it was full of love. We can only hope that he felt it too - every ounce of love, respect, kindness and admiration we all had for him. He had a great sense of humour and had many amusing sayings, one of which was "What, what?" The memories are endless of all the fun we had as a family.
Left to share loving, wonderful stories and memories of Joseph 'Papa Joe' are his brother Stipa (Steficia) and sister Vera along with many nieces and nephews back in Croatia; his loving and devoted wife of 59 plus years, Joyce, and his children, Brenda (Dale), Joey (Linda), Nancy (Murray) and Lisa (David); his grandchildren, Jaclyn, Madilyn (Aaron), Zora and Eric; his great-grandchildren, Jayda, Mason, Jude and Emme.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Joe. I met Joe when I started working at Shnieders in the 80's and soon learned what a hard working and dedicated man he was. Living in the same area I would see Joe often we would always have a chat of how we were getting on. He had a great sense of humour and a very caring man. My condolences to Joyce and his entire family. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Harold Willerton (Friend) on: Jul 03, 2021

My deepest condolences to the Vasarevic family. Joe and I created many fond memories, shared in laughter and good times. He has moved on to heaven, where he will take over the sausage division. May he rest in peace. Until we meet again, Diboja Joe. - Posted by: Danny Kowalchuk (Friend) on: May 30, 2021

Joe was such a good man, a hard worker, a loving grandpa and supportive father. I have many fond memories of family dinners that were always full of laughter and of a very special trip to Barbados. He loved to travel and my husband and I enjoyed spending a week with Joe and Joyce in Barbados for our children’s wedding. We had such a wonderful time, lots of fun excursions and a magical day on a hilltop overlooking the ocean for the wedding. Joe was so proud of his youngest daughter and his smile said it all. His grandchildren will miss visits with ‘Papa Joe’ and we will miss his sense of humour and his kindness. - Posted by: Daisy Brunet (Mother of Joe’s son-in-law) on: May 29, 2021

Kum Joso, as we called him, was a loving person who I remember dearly throughout my childhood. He was always laughing and he and Kuma Joycie, as we called her, were two strong and caring people that raised four beautiful children. We had fun times in those days often going to each other's houses and spending summer days outdoors picnicking or barbequeing. Kum was always generous and a kind spirit. My deepest condolences to the family and especially to Kuma who I know will miss him so very much. Go in peace, Kum, go in love. There are no words to explain the sorrow we are all in on the passing of such a special man. Joe taught me how to cut meat, make sausage and was a true mentor for me. He also showed me how to enjoy life and treat people with respect and dignity. I will never forget the friendship we had the last 47 years and was honoured to know him. My deepest sympathy to the family and hope we can meet when this covid is over. - Posted by: David Gulakow (Friend) on: May 28, 2021

I enjoyed many good times making sausage with my pal. Well Joe was making the sausage, I was mostly sampling. My deepest sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Dennis Tysoski (Good friend) on: May 26, 2021
