DOUGLAS SMART
December 30, 1940 - June 5, 2021

Douglas Alexander Smart was born in Duffus, a small village in the highlands of Scotland, on December 30, 1940 to Charles and Alice Smart. He spent his childhood and early youth growing up in Scotland.
He immigrated to Canada with his parents in his mid-teens. Adjusting to life in Canada was not easy, but meeting Esther made life in Canada much more enjoyable. They both worked at the Employment Canada office, and on June 2, 1962, Doug and Esther were married. Together they had four children: Sharon (deceased), Michael, Shelley, and Grant (deceased).
Doug worked for the Government of Canada throughout his career as a prison guard, parole officer, and employment counsellor. Upon retiring, he served as part-time community pastor at Transcona Alliance Church. Doug was a selfless and devoted family man and cherished every moment he had with his loved ones. While he loved fishing, reading, and crossword puzzles, his favourite pastime was connecting with people. Doug had an uncanny way of making people feel heard, understood, and loved.
Undoubtedly, this is directly related to his faith journey. In his early 30s, Doug met Jesus in a profoundly personal way and for the rest of his life, he endeavoured to see and love others as God does. Many of us have been touched by this love.
While Doug has moved on to a much better place, remaining here are his loving wife of 59 years, Esther, son Michael, daughter Shelley, son-in-law Steve; daughters-in-law, Tina and Christy; grandchildren, Jonathan (and Kristian), Jocelyn, Emily, and Grace; and great-grandson Elliot; sisters-in-law, Gladys and Donna; as well as nieces and nephews, Larry, Carol, Rick, Angela, Jeff, Shaun, Leanne, Deline, Lerel, Arlen, Calen, Cherise, Teresa and Chris. Within the borders of his family, however, are countless others.
Doug was predeceased by parents, Charles and Alice Smart; children, Sharon and Grant Smart; brother-in-law Sam, and sister-in-law Norma.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the amazing medical staff at St. Boniface Hospital who cared for him and for all the friends who have expressed sympathy and support.
Donations can be made to the food bank where Doug volunteered (https://cornerstone alliance.church and click on the Give icon) or to the Rejesha Project, a ministry in which Doug's granddaughter volunteers, which aims to restore hope to women and girls being exploited in the sex industry in Nairobi. Donations can be e-transferred to mike@trailview.org (non-receiptable).
The funeral service for Doug Smart will be held on Monday, June 14 at 1:00 p.m.

Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance (Psalm 16:5-6)
