August 18, 1955 – June 18, 2021

Delia Roberta Petrash passed away on Friday, June 18, 2021 at her home in Winnipeg, Canada. Delia was predeceased by her parents, Olga and Matthew Petrash. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, Fletcher Baragar; her daughter Jennifer Baragar-Petrash; her son Matthew Baragar-Petrash and her brother Alan (Sharon) Petrash.
Delia was born in Winnipeg on August 18, 1955. She was raised in Winnipeg's north end, attended school there, and graduated from Sisler High School in 1973. Her parents and extended family had strong ties to the Ukrainian community, and in particular to the Ukranian Labour Temple, and those formative influences instilled in Delia a love and appreciation for Ukrainian food, music and dance, and an enduring concern for social justice.
Upon completing high school, Delia continued her formal education as a student in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba. She graduated with a BSc (Animal Science) in 1977. After graduation, Delia gained work experience in a number of different jobs before being hired as an agronomist by Manitoba Egg Farmers (MEF). This proved to be an excellent fit, and Delia remained with MEF for over thirty years until her retirement in 2020. Delia and Fletcher first met in 1989, and instantly became a couple. They married in 1994 and raised their family in the River Heights neighbourhood of Winnipeg.
Ever since her university days, Delia lived a full and active life. She always had projects and activities on the go, and was invariably eager to widen her range of experiences and activities. As an adult, she took piano and singing lessons, sang in choirs and participated in the Manitoba Music Festival, learned the art of stained glass, took a university course in Classics, and was perennially engaged in home improvement projects. She played tennis and flag football, rode horses, loved to travel and obtained a certificate in scuba diving. She was a tireless swimmer, an avid skier (downhill and cross-country) and loved canoeing, kayaking, camping and hiking. Many of her walks and outings were legendary, as a "short" or "quick" walk around a neighbourhood or along a trail could readily end up as an extended expedition, inadvertently testing the capacity and fortitude of whomsoever may be accompanying her.
Delia had an especially strong love of the outdoors and the natural environment. Lake Winnipeg was a special place, and at various times she owned (or partially owned) cottages at Husavik, Grand Beach and Beaver Creek. Florence Lake in the Whiteshell was another special place, and with the completion of their new cabin in 2008, Florence Lake has been "the lake" for Delia, Fletcher and the family. It is significant that Delia played a central role in the design of this cabin, and it was her initiative and energy that was instrumental in the realization of this project.
Notwithstanding all of these activities and interests, family was always first and foremost for Delia. She dearly loved her children, Jennie and Matthew, and she was a passionate and tireless source of support and comfort for them.

  • Delia and I shared a love of singing, running, our husbands and our children, and not in that order. She was passionate about everything she did and she was a ball of energy. She outwalked me on the last walk we took together, just two months ago in Assiniboine Park. I will miss her beautiful smile, her lovely voice and her infectious laughter. - Posted by: Joy Cooper (Friend) on: Jul 09, 2021
