ELIZABETH (BETTY) ANN HUGHES
June 8, 1922 Abernethy, Saskatchewan
July 2, 2021 Calgary, Alberta
Betty was born in Abernethy, Saskatchewan to Allan and Edna Brooks and spent her childhood there with two brothers, Art and Phil. Upon graduation she pursued higher education at the Regina Normal School and the University of Saskatchewan, where she met Pearse Hughes from the neighbouring town of Lemberg. They were married in 1948 and made a life together in Toronto, Winnipeg, Montréal and Calgary.
Along the way they had four children, Ann, Joan, David and Tom. They made lifelong friends in the many communities to which they belonged. Pearse and Betty enjoyed travelling to Europe, Australia and several parts of North America, visiting family, renewing friendships and making new ones. Their summer home at Falcon Lake, Manitoba was a gathering place for friends and family for almost 65 years. Betty treasured the annual get-togethers and especially enjoyed having the grandkids around.
Everywhere Betty and Pearse lived, they soon joined the local United Church, where Betty volunteered unceasingly. When they moved to Montréal, Betty went back to college and then worked for several years, a very satisfying part of her life. In Calgary she joined a senior's choir and sang with that group for 20 years. Always busy, always curious, always intellectually engaged, she had a rich and fulfilling life, surrounded by much love.
Betty is survived by her children, Ann Hughes, Joan Goodman, David Hughes (Phillippe Picoux) and Tom Hughes (Martha); and her grandchildren, Andrew, Michael and Christopher Goodman, Robert and William Hughes, and Sarah and Jennifer Hughes. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Pearse (2007), and her son-in-law, Gary Goodman.
Funeral services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to join Mrs. Hughes' service streamed live at https://mhfh.com/tribute/details/33427/Elizabeth-Betty-HUGHES/obituary.html#tribute-start on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the funeral home. Interment at the Southeast Whiteshell Cemetery at Falcon Lake, Manitoba will be in 2022.
