KELLY ROY FLORENCE
Kelly is survived and will be missed by his daughter Jaide, his parents, Bill and Jody, his sister Kristy, his grandmother Betty Florence, numerous extended family members across the provinces, and the community that he surrounded himself with in Ottawa that became his family.
Kelly was predeceased by his grandparents, Roy and Jeraldine McMeekin, grandfather Bob Florence, and Aunt Dianne McMeekin.
Born on April 14, 1972, Kelly grew up in Winnipeg, playing hockey and skateboarding all over North Kildonan. He was charismatic by nature, easily making friends wherever he went. He lived his life on his own terms and left Winnipeg in his late teens to live in BC for a few years before settling in Ottawa, where his daughter, Jaide, was born.
Cremation has taken place and although no formal service will occur, Kelly's family and friends in Ottawa will hold a Celebration of Life in his honour.
Donations in Kelly's name may be made to the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre in Winnipeg.

I miss you more than words can say. You were part of my life for what seems like forever. You were my soldier and I know you loved me no matter what, as I loved you no matter what. I will keep your memory alive with our daughter always. I'm sorry you lost the fight but you have it a hell of a try. Always in my heart my love. I had the privilege of knowing Kelly for nearly 20 years. I met him through a friend of his while being an outreach worker. What struck me right away was the kindness in his eyes and that childlike quality of being spontaneous and quick to smile. Kelly had many struggles but like the phoenix he always seemed to rise out of the darkness. He fought hard to be a voice for his community and never backed down from systemic challenges. He advocated tirelessly for his people to be recognized and respected. He sat on many committees, created a harm reduction newsletter, co facilitated a support group for users called “Supper and Support “ and brought many people to community centres to access care. I remember how heartbroken he was when he could no longer see his daughter and stepson. Though so weary at times he never gave up. I once again had the privilege of witnessing his heart shine when they came back into his life . Kelly was kind and gentle but street life forces you to be tough in order to survive. The mind may play tricks on us but heart never does, and Kelly had a heart of gold. He spoke often of his family of west. He was a great tattoo artist, a passionate human being, a survivor, a tender soul who loved chili dogs, perogies with sausages and camaraderie. We have lost a special person. My heart aches for the loss of this soldier in the battle for better social and health care for the community he knew to be his Ottawa family. - Posted by: Ryta Peschka (Counsellor, ally, friend) on: Jul 28, 2021

I was fortunate to be close friends w/ Kelly for 25 years; he contributed so much to marginalized people in Ottawa thru his work in the community and kindness to all...the research he did, his advocacy, his love of the underdog are all things that made Kelly as special as he was. He is my brother and he will be greatly missed... - Posted by: Sean LeBlanc (friend/co-worker) on: Jul 26, 2021
