SOFIA BURTYK
(nee MELNYK)
She is survived by her sister Yaroslava in Serbia, brother Vasyl in Australia, and a nephew Andrij in Ottawa and their families.
Sofia was born in Bosnia (former Yugoslavia). Married in Great Britain, Sofia and Petro resided there until the late 1960s. Sofia completed courses in fashion design and dressmaking and has worked for many years in the garment industry. Sofia was active in Winnipeg's Ukrainian community, singing in both the Dumka and Ukrainian Millennium choirs. She was a long-time Executive member of the Canadian Ukrainian Institute 'Prosvita', the UCWL at Sts. Volodymyr & Olha Cathedral, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Manitoba Provincial Council and Prosvita's Seniors Club. She was well-known as a cultural guide at the Kyiv Pavilion during Folklorama.
Funeral services will be held at the Sts. Volodymyr & Olha Cathedral on Tuesday, July 27 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Ihor Shved officiating. The service can be accessed on the church's website: www.stvo.ca/live
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sofia's memory can be made to the Canadian Ukrainian Institute Prosvita, 777 Pritchard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2X 0E8.
