WILLIAM DONN KIRTON
May 18, 1934 - July 20, 2021

Surrounded by his loving family, Donn passed away quite suddenly on Tuesday.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, Norine; his parents, William and Violet Kirton; siblings, Norman, Gary and Gloria, and step-siblings, Peter and Betty. Donn is survived by his children, Noralee, Kathy (Brian), Carol (Roger) and Bruce (Linda); grandchildren, Mike (Megan), Kyle (Kelsey), Jason (Jess), Vanessa, Thomas (Amrit) and Gen; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Logan, Mason, Bella and William; and his best pal, TC (The Cat).
A longer obituary will follow but for now we would like to share this. Dad has written a daily newsletter to his kids and grandkids everyday for six years, sharing family news, positive thoughts and a joke of the day. He wrote this in 2018 and tucked it away in his favourite chair for us to share on his passing. If you knew him, you can hear his voice.

Greetings Dear Loved Ones
I know you didn't expect to be hearing from me…But you know how it is with an old ham like me…Hey I've got a captive audience..
I am not going to tell you a corny story but I do want you to know how much I love each and everyone of you…I want you to know I consider myself to have been the luckiest guy in the world…To have been surrounded by such a loving and caring family…Wonderful friends and neighbours..So please don't mourn my passing…Celebrate my many blessings..As I mentioned I won't bore you with any of my corny stories no matter how tempted I may be..But I would like to leave you with a little laugh..Tee hee..
I gotta go now because I got a date with an Angel..Goodbye Boys and Girls. HO HO HO

At Donn's request, there will be no formal funeral but his hope was that you would call up a friend to recall some stories and share some laughs.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Agape Table or any charity of your choice.
We would like to thank CJOB and everyone for their kind words and shared memories. Dad would be humbled and pleased. Thanks also to Dad's kind neighbours, especially Tracy, for all their help.

Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • A favorite memory of mine is Don (I can still hear his voice with great clarity in my mind) doing the PA work at the old Winnipeg Arena back in 1972. As exciting as witnessing the goal itself, Don thrilled me the way he announced "Winnipeg Jets goal scored by number 9....Bobby... HULL!!!" I wish I could have bumped into Don to pay him the compliment. Condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Rob Lifchus (Fan) on: Feb 10, 2022

  • Every time I think of Donn, I smile and giggle a bit. That’s what Donn did with his warmth, kindness and bad jokes, which he thought were uproariously funny! He made you feel like you were his new best friend. Noralee and Family, my sincere condolences. There are so many of us who loved him too. RIP my dear friend. - Posted by: Maureen Murphy (Friend ) on: Jul 25, 2021

  • I did not know Donn personally but I was a very good friend of his sister Gloria who passed away in 2014. I do remember that she spoke very highly of Donn and it was obvious how proud she was of him. My condolences to the family as they mourn the loss of their loved one. - Posted by: Angela (friend of his sister) on: Jul 24, 2021

  • In 1966 Donn and I worked at CKY and in March we were the only ones that made it to the station for continuous messaging during the March blizzard. Others relieved us later but it was a moment with this gentle, humorous, kind man for me,,, a teenager. Donn ("Suet Sam") was a fantastic broadcaster, and great eater! He was always willing to share his pan-fried shrimp at Chan's Moon Room next door to CKY on Main Street. He will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Jake Marks (friend/colleague) on: Jul 24, 2021

  • It is with tearful eyes I say farewell to my old friend Kirt. I hope when he arrives in heaven he meets our best friends Wilber and Buckets. Sing a chorus of your Favourite Al Jolson song “Swanee”. Rest easy my friend. Swede. (Ron) - Posted by: Ron Magnuson (Friend) on: Jul 24, 2021

  • Although Don & I were unable to stay in touch, due to my re-location to the east, it is with great remorse I feel hearing about his passing. It is with the upmost respect & sincerity that I can say, Don was the most professional, upbeat, sincere & jovial person I have met in & outside media. l had the pleasure of working with him at CJOB on many public events, including live broadcasts and there was never a time when he wasn't prepared to the fullest degree. His pipes speak for themselves, but there's no doubt he made everyone he came in contact with leave with positive energy and a smile on their face. A true giant that left the world a better place for blessing us with his presence. RIP Kirts... AJ (Jonesy) - Posted by: Al Jones (ex colleague) on: Jul 24, 2021

  • I am saddened to hear about your Dad’s passing. I co-hosted cruises with Donn and Norine several times and what fun did we have. Donn was our Pied Piper and had so many people wanted to cruise with him. You are so lucky to have such a kind, caring, and fun loving person for a Dad. Never did I hear a negative word from him. The glass was always half full! Cherish your memories of him; I know I will. My thoughts are with you today. Bev Harbour - Posted by: Bev Harbour (Travel Agent) on: Jul 24, 2021

  • I had the good fortune of working with Donn at OB. I loved doing remotes with him. Such a gentleman and, mentor and fans would come over and love to meet the man with the great laugh. That was the true Donn - always laughing and humbled that so many people wanted to speak with him. He will be missed by many who loved him. He sure loved his wife Norinne and his family. - Posted by: Jocelyn Greenwood (Co worker) on: Jul 24, 2021
