WINONA SUSAN REMPEL
(nee JANZEN)

After a lengthy illness, Winona Susan Rempel (nee Janzen) born August 16, 1935, died on July 26, 2021.
Winona was predeceased by her parents, Gerhardt and Bertha Janzen; survived by her husband of 65 years, William Rempel; her children, Teresa (Tim Groening) and Martin (Caroll Thain); beloved grandchildren, Emily and Matthew Rempel; her brother Edward Janzen (Susan) and sister Betty Janzen.
Winona was born near Gimli and grew up in Springstein, MB where she met William. They married in 1956 and lived and raised their children in Winnipeg.
As a young woman Winona was a permit teacher at Winnipegosis and later a teller for the Royal Bank in Winnipeg. She ran a nursery school for several years then worked for the Royal Bank once more. Following this she worked for University of Manitoba food services in the Greenhouse Café, tried her hand at real estate, and later became a massage therapist. Winona was particularly proud of her work as a lay minister at Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship and her volunteer work with the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre and the Mood Disorders Association.
Winona revelled in the beauty she could create in her garden, sewing room, home, and kitchen. She brought that creative spirit to everything she did, be it a sermon, children's story, or family dinner. She was a great lover of animals and now it is we who feed the stray who still comes to her door.
Our family would like to thank the many friends who supported us in the last eight months. Thanks also to the health care aides and palliative home care staff who helped Mom stay at home as long as possible and to St. Boniface Palliative staff who provided excellent care in her last days.
Should you care to make a charitable donation in Winona's name, please consider Mennonite Central Committee or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
Cremation has taken place. Due to Covid 19 a private service for Winona will be held August 9, 2021 and will be broadcast via zoom. The link will be posted on the Friends Funeral Service website at https://www.friendsfs.ca
