JOHN DUNCAN MUNDIE
August 13, 1930 – April 23, 2020

In sorrow the family of John Mundie announce his passing at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, in his 90th year, following a fall in March 2020 while vacationing in Victoria, BC.
He leaves his loving and devoted wife Margaret (nee Stevenson), children, Robert (husband Nicholas Galambos) and Diane (Richard Dillabough), grandchildren, John, Elizabeth (Lizzie) and Duncan, as well as his surviving twin brother Peter (Anne) of Hudson, QC, and brother-in-law Bruce Roberton (Jean Ann).
John taught for 40 years at the University of Manitoba and was passionate about teaching. At retirement he was appointed Senior Scholar and Dean Emeritus of the Asper School of Business. He was involved nationally with a number of academic institutions, including the Banff School of Advanced Management. Locally, he participated in associations furthering the economic development of Winnipeg.
In the 20 years following his retirement, John established and led the University of Manitoba Retirees Association, and was also a founding member of the College and University Retiree Associations of Canada (CURAC).
Beyond his passion for his family and for teaching, John had a lifelong love of music, having been a choir member of First Presbyterian Church for 75 years as well as a member of the Bison Men's Chorus since its inception in 1985. He also loved the outdoors which in his earlier years included leading scout camps, but over his life included canoeing, fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
A private celebration of his life will take place on Friday, August 13, 2021. Interment will follow at the St. Vital Cemetery.
If friends so desire, a donation can be made to the John D. Mundie Emergency Bursary Fund at: Donor Relations, 200-137 Innovation Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3T 6B6.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • On behalf of the Commerce graduating class of 1965, I wish to express our collective feeling of sadness and sense of loss with John’s passing last year. Back in the day, he was without doubt our most revered professor – articulate and humorous in his mapping out the ways of the real world for us - and in more recent times, was the honoured guest at class reunions held in 2010 and 2015. He will be greatly missed by all of us. - Posted by: Jack Goodman (Friend) on: Aug 12, 2021

  • My condolences to Margaret and family on Johns passing. He was a wonderful human being and a tribute to the Asper School of Business. May he Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Vicky Wilson (Friend) on: Aug 07, 2021

  • I had John as a prof at U of M in 1986 in my last year of Electrical Engineering taking a business course. He was a great prof and funny too. I became self-employed at 27 in 1990 in Engineering and Development and became wealthy. Maybe his class rubbed off on me. He lived a full life for sure. God Bless.
