ELIZABETH (BETTE) MAY ZACHARIAS
(nee WARKENTIN)
March 15, 1940 - August 6, 2021
Bette is survived by her daughters, Kim Zacharias, Melanie (Gord) Mathews and Monica (James) Buller; and her eight grandchildren, Lucas (Reva), Nolan (Kerrie), Marissa (Russell), Ajabi and Mitsy, Jessica (Colin), Cole and Riley. Bette was predeceased by her granddaughters, Emma and Sarah; her parents; her brothers, John, Pete and Walter; and her sisters, Kay and Anne.
Mom was born to Cornelius and Tina Warkentin in Winkler, Manitoba. She was the youngest daughter of the family and was given the nickname "girl" which stuck with her through the years. Mom grew up on the farm and found out quickly that the farm life was not for her and headed to the big city of Winnipeg as soon as she was able. Mom and her sister Anne shared an apartment and Mom began her career as a secretary employed for a variety of companies and ending her career working for Emergency Measures Organization.
In Mom's journal she wrote of a time in her life when she chose to follow God's direction. She felt a strong responsibility to raise her then young two-year-old daughter Kim in the church and thus began her lifelong relationship of following God. She strived to grow in her relationship with Christ and continued to make Grant Memorial Church her home church for many decades. She continued to grow in her faith by reading The Daily Bread, her Bible, being a part of Grant and working on her relationship with Jesus.
We cannot speak about our Mama without speaking about her children and grandchildren. She was so proud of all of us. She voiced it often to her grandchildren by telling each one of them they were the best. Her Instagram is titled 8isgood (eight grandchildren are good). She had time with every one of her grandchildren from the day they were born until the last time they were together. We will all miss her smile, her love, her sense of humour, the voice on the other end of the telephone. We are so thankful that she was a part of our lives and are thankful that we have many memories of our times together.
Her funeral service will be held at Grant Memorial Church on Friday, August 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Grant Memorial Church CarePortal.
But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. - Romans 5:8

I haven’t known Bette for that many years but that was one of her delightful characteristics; she made me feel as if we had been friends forever. This ability was due to her warm and loving nature. I also loved her sense of humour and she could easily send out witty come backs when teased by my husband George. Our family will miss Bette and we appreciate how she welcomed Reva into her family. - Posted by: Roberta Irvine (Frienf) on: Aug 11, 2021
