HEATHER MARGARET MOFFATT
(nee BISHOP)
Born in Carman to Isabel and Lisgar Bishop, Heather is survived by daughter Erin, grandson Griffin and his father Larry; son Andrew (Dana), granddaughter Annalynn and grandson Callum; daughter Bronwyn, grandsons, Ossian and Sage, and their father Chris, as well as former husband Bob. She is also survived by siblings, Lynn (Lesley), Darryl (Janet) and Cindy (Bruce) as well as nieces and nephews, Kirsten, Sean, Ainsley, Gillian, Ben, Kyla and Andrew.
Heather spent her formative years growing up in Selkirk and her teen years in Norwood, graduating from Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Following in her mother's footsteps, Heather chose primary education as a profession, graduating from Normal School with her Teaching Certificate. After teaching in rural Manitoba and Winnipeg, Heather married and raised her family. After obtaining her BEd degree from the University of Manitoba in her early forties, Heather sidestepped to work as a flight attendant for a few years, later returning to the classroom. Always fully engaged and determined to make a difference in young lives, Heather was particularly pleased to teach at Niji Makhwa Elementary School and to learn more of the culture of her Indigenous students. It was from this last and most meaningful of her teaching positions that she chose to retire.
In cherishing family above all else Heather was a loving mother, "Grammy", sister and daughter who reveled in simple pleasures: good discussion and laughs with family and friends; river drives to Selkirk with a hot dog at Skinners; tending to her cozy house, flowers and greenery; skating on the Red River and teaching her grandsons to skate; reading avidly and watching a wide range of movies; enjoying country music before country was cool; discovering the joys of camping and white water rafting in later years with her siblings; keeping abreast of current affairs and above all, enjoying FaceTime chats and when able to do so, being with her children and grandchildren.
Toward the end and thinking always of her love for her grandchildren, Heather wished nothing but the best for them. She aspired that Griffin thrive on his journey with Autism. She wished that Ossian and Sage be fulfilled, enjoy and share with others their creative and artistic talents. She treasured time spent with her youngest grandchildren Annalynn and Callum, though wished they had not been separated by quite so many miles.
As for her children, each of whom she loved dearly and valued for their unique attributes:
"They picked her up and rocked her back
and forth, back and forth, back and forth
We'll love you always We'll like you always
As long as we're living Our Mummy you'll be."
Robert Munsch.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude and thanks to those at CancerCare and the Palliative Care Team who looked after Heather so very well.

I remember Heather as a no-nonsense, yet creative, caring, nurturing teacher, both supportive of students and helpful to fellow staff; as a fun loving « Golden Girl », ready and able to enjoy an evening out, a weekend cross country skiing or a few summer days at the lake; a dedicated mother whose children were her pride and joy, and even in their adulthood were never far from her thoughts; a grandmother who loved her grandchildren deeply, and helped cultivate their individual talents, interests and abilities. I remember jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, walks, political talks, movies and lots of laughs in Metchosen (along with good food). And I will never forget her natural, sincere, open smile that lit up her whole face. Absolutely beautiful! It lit up one’s heart. My thoughts are with her children, grandchildren, siblings and families. I will miss her. - Posted by: Gail langendorfer (Friend) on: Aug 21, 2021

Mrs. Moffatt taught me when I was in Grade 4 at Ralph Maybank School. I struggled with friendships and I often remember sitting with her in the library and she listened and talked with me like I was the only person there. I'm 57 now and have thought of her often and the comfort and acceptance I felt from her. RIP Mrs. Moffatt - Posted by: Sandi (Student) on: Aug 14, 2021

Heather and I were grandmothers together and shared a common bond through our grandsons Sage and Ossian. Over the years, we also forged a close friendship and enjoyed spending time together as well as sharing activities with the boys. Heather was my first friend when I moved to Winnipeg four years ago. She taught me many important things about Prairie living which helped me acclimatize to my new chosen home and for which I shall always be grateful. She was devoted to her family and I will always remember her as a valued and unique friend. I shall miss her greatly. - Posted by: Pamela Jeffrey (Friend and paternal grandmother to Sage and Ossian) on: Aug 14, 2021

This is a huge loss for so many, family and friends alike. Heather was a fine homemaker, teacher mother grandmother and friend. She had such strength of character and a grand sense of humour. We grew up together in Selkirk as close friends and continued our friendship until she passed regardless of the miles between us at times. Her passing leaves a great void in many lives but also an abundance of wonderful memories of love, laughter and good times. - Posted by: Myrna Ferguson (Friend) on: Aug 14, 2021

I met Heather while working at Niji Mahkwa School. We were very sad when she decided to retire from teaching because she was one of our favourite substitute teachers. Heather was very respectful of the Indigenous culture and she went out of her way to learn and integrate Indigenous education with her lessons. She really cared about the children and they sensed her care and concern. I will always remember sitting and talking with Heather in the staff room, listening to her stories of the different things she had done in her life as well as stories of her family. She enjoyed spending time with her family and looked forward to her vacation time in BC. Heather was a kindred spirit and she will be greatly missed! - Posted by: Fran Smith (friend) on: Aug 14, 2021

Deepest sympathy to Heather's family. I remember so well the times we played together as children. Although we didn't see other that often as we grew older, family is family, and memories are precious. I admire Heather's courage. - Posted by: Diane Nixon (Cousin) on: Aug 14, 2021
