YVONNE JENORA TONNELLIER
(nee MATTHEWS)
She is survived by her children, Ed (Jane), Kim (Don), David (Laura), Terri (TBD?), Lilja (Tim); her grandchildren, Marina (Keegan), Janelle (Keith), Trent, Josh, Jayden; and her great-grandchildren, Gunnar, Arielle, Madeleine and Vivienne.
She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Leon (2009), companion Art Wattis (2014) and brother Larry (1988); as well as her parents, Pjetur and Lilja Matthews.
Yvonne was born in Winnipeg, January 19, 1935, where she grew up in the West End and spent many summers in the Glenboro area with family. Yvonne met Leon at a party with her friend and walked up and down Osborne hoping to run into him to only find out later he had been out of town. Eventually they met again, got married May 27, 1955, and raised a family.
She worked as a nurse's aide and unit clerk at Health Sciences Centre Children's Hospital for 23 years. She was an active member at First Lutheran Church, Orioles Community Centre and Valour Road Curling Club. She developed close friends through her passion for volunteering including teaching Sunday School and being a Cub Scout Akale. Her home also welcomed many neighbourhood children. In fact, there could have been a revolving door on the home welcoming anyone who needed a place to stay including her brother for many years.
Yvonne was actively involved in curling which was a family passion, and she was the biggest fan of her kids and watching her sons compete at a high level. She also loved to watch all her kids compete in their endeavours. She loved to bake especially Icelandic Vinarterta and her famous fudge for any school event. Other pastimes were sewing, singing and gambling (Blackjack and Bingo). She had an adventurous spirit, which meant many family trips and she never met a rollercoaster she didn't like. She always said, she would "try anything once". You could always put a smile on her face by offering her candy and a diet coke. In fact, she drank so much of it she should have bought shares in Coca Cola. She relaxed watching soap operas and game shows.
The family would like to thank the Grace Hospital staff and the St. Vital and River Heights Home Care program workers for making her days comfortable.
The Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion - 426 Osborne St. - on Friday, August 27, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.
If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Lutheran Church.

Condolences to the family, so sad to hear of your Mom's passing. She was a kind soul, always had a smile on her face and kind words when we dropped by the house. I will always remember her as my Akela in the Cub troop at First Lutheran Church. That was where I became friends with Ed and the friendship with you and the family continues to this day. I remember all the times I spent at the big noisy house. I met Kim and Terry when we twirling batons in our youth. Then all the crazy house parties Ed would throw as young adults. Leon and Yvonne were such good mentors and listeners always greeted with open arms. I’m so sorry for your loss my old friends, now your folks are back together.
