WINNIFRED JOYCE (HENDERSON) BROOKS

It is with deep sadness that we regret to announce the unexpected passing of Joyce Brooks on August 17, 2021, at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 86.
A true Scottish lass that spent the early part of her life in St. James and her retirement years in Charleswood after returning from a 30-year layover in Montreal.
She is survived by her beloved husband Murray T. Brooks of 63 years. She also leaves behind to mourn her son Kevin (Theresa) from Yellowknife, NT; son-in-law Alan (Susan) from Beausejour, MB; grandchildren, Julianna, Danny, Katrina (Grant), Iain, and Paulina, as well as step-grandchildren, Jon and Nicholas; brothers, Garry (Jeanette), Danny (Lynne); sister Florance Anderson; sister-in-law Lorna Bilokury; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends
Joyce was predeceased by her daughter Corri; parents, George and Winnie Henderson; brothers, George (Lina), Don (Bert) and David; as well as brothers-in-law, Wayne Anderson, Omar Bilokury and Carl (Doreen) Brooks.
My parents met in St. James and were married by May 30, 1958. Although their hearts would always remain in Winnipeg, they soon found themselves adjusting to a new life in Montreal. This city was to bring them great joy with the arrival of Corri (1962) and Kevin (1963). Mom got involved with Brownies, Guides and became the treasurer of local swimming pool where our family spent most of our summer when not in Winnipeg. Mom would continue with all sorts of sporting and non-profit groups volunteering. Most recently she was involved with the family council where she was an active member at Deer Lodge Centre, and later when she was asked to serve on the Advisor Council for Long Term Care for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
Mom loved her rose and flower gardens, but she had a love/hate relationship with the deer that would often eat her geraniums buds. She was an avid knitter and boy could she knit. She knit countless scarves for the many staff that cared for Dad at Deer Lodge Centre.
A very special thanks to Uncle Dan and Aunt Lynne who were with Mom at the time of her passing. I can never thank you enough for everything you do and continue to do for our family. Also, I want to thank Deer Lodge Centre on behalf of my mother for the ongoing care they continue to provide for my father. Her soul will rest easy knowing that he's in such capable hands until they meet again.
A celebration of Joyce's life will take place at 2:00 p.m., August 28, 2021, at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba followed by internment by Mom's immediate family members. A reception will follow the Celebration of Life and immediate family will join the reception once the internment is complete. Please ensure that you bring stories and interactions you had with Mom as they will provide us with the strength to carry on. We will laugh, we will cry, but most of all we will remember.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Deer Lodge Centre or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions and contact tracing, an RSVP is kindly requested. Should you wish to attend Joyce's Celebration of Life, please RSVP your seat to Chapel Lawn Funeral Home between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. by calling 204-885-9715.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I just read of Murray’s passing and was shocked to read that Joyce had passed. I was at Deer Lodge for 27 years and got to know Joyce very well. Loved her and when I found out she was an avid knitter we shared a number of knitting patterns. She was a wonderful wonderful woman. My deepest condolences - Posted by: sandra magnusson (Friend/ hairdresser at deer lodge ) on: Nov 06, 2021

  • I mourn the loss Joyce and will fondly remember the roast beef dinners, the Yorkshire puddings, her collection of gadgets and especially the dear sweet lady that she was. My sincere condolences to the Brooks extended family. Beth Maurer, (neighbour) - Posted by: Beth Maurer (neighbour) on: Aug 29, 2021

  • Joyce was a wonderful neighbour we often crossed the busy boulevard to visit & chat. Of cheerful and uplifting spirit, she always had us smiling. We met Joyce & Murray when we moved here 20 years ago, they were neighbours/friends with my folks for years before that, and very supportive of their decision to age in place. Once when Dad took the car out & couldn’t get it home, Murray & Joyce drove it back for them. If Joyce thought you needed help, she was there in a flash. Although we hadn’t visited recently, Joyce is a memorable person we are grateful to have known. Our sincere condolences to the Brooks family and May your memories comfort you as you mourn the loss of a dear Matriarch. - Posted by: Bonnie & Jim Taylor (Friend & Neighbour ) on: Aug 25, 2021

  • Joyce will be sadly missed. She was always such a giving person and thinking of others. Joyce had great stories to share and for some of us always gave us an insight to some family memories. She was a great long time friend to the Elliotts. Our hearts go out to her family at this time. - Posted by: Mary (Family friend and hairstylist) on: Aug 24, 2021

  • Mrs. Brooks was like my second mom growing up. Spent much time with Kevin and the family, she would even keep "peanuts" on hand knowing how much I loved them. My sympathies on her loss, may your memories be fond as mine are. God's Blessings. - Posted by: David Wood (Friend of the family) on: Aug 23, 2021

  • Florence...Guy and I are so sorry to hear of your sisters passing, I know you had a close bond with her. Our prayers are with you and the rest of the family. - Posted by: Adele Finch (Friend) on: Aug 22, 2021

  • Kevin, know we share your sorrow of the unexpected loss of your beautiful Mom. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Your Mom was such a beautiful lady and conversation with her came quite easily even though we only met on a few occasions. May her sleep be a restful one knowing her chores are finally done. - Posted by: Cathy Hill (Friend and Aunt of Kevin) on: Aug 21, 2021

  • I have had the privilege of having this wonderful lady as my aunt and godmother. Aunt Joyce always had a way of making myself and all who knew her feel special and loved. The Brooks home whether in Montreal or Winnipeg always had an open door policy for those who travelled to visit or pop in for just a cup of coffee and a chat. Aunt Joyce was always happy to cook up a delicious dinner while Uncle Murray played host and tour guide. Dear Aunt Joyce, I will miss your wit, your humour, your wisdom and love. Rest easily now, love Janet - Posted by: Janet Kowal (Niece/ God daughter ) on: Aug 21, 2021
