KATHLEEN JOAN LYONS

After a brave battle with cancer, Kathleen Joan Lyons passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at St. Boniface Hospital.
Joan was born on February 2, 1954 and grew up on Whytewold Rd. in St. James. She graduated from Silver Heights Collegiate in 1972 and after high school she worked for two years for Red Cross Blood Transfusion Services. She then moved to Toronto and worked for C.N. Express. In 1975, Joan enrolled into the Red River Community College pre-employment carpentry course, eventually becoming the first female in Manitoba to receive Red Seal Journeyman status in Carpentry in 1980.
In October of 1983 she began working at the Health Sciences Centre in the Maintenance Department. This is where she would enjoy a 26-year career and met the love of her life, Chris Simcoe. She was particularly proud of the work she did for the Queen Elizabeth's visit to the Health Sciences Centre in 1984, where she built the rostrum the Queen used for her address to officially open the new Children's Hospital.
Joan loved spending her summer days at the family cottage at Silver Bay on Lake Manitoba. She enjoyed playing badminton with her friends at Glenwood Community Club and many rounds of golf with her friends at John Bloomberg and Assiniboine Golf Club. She was an animal lover and loved her many pets over the years; Fiona was her favourite. She had a love for the arts and enjoyed many visits to the WSO, WAG and MTC. In retirement, she enrolled in classes looking to explore and improve her own artistic talents. Joan especially cherished James Bond movies and Perry Mason television shows.
She loved to travel, and her love of golf led her to many parts of the world. Joan and Chris attended The Ryder Cup in Chicago, the President's Cup in San Franciso, and the Solheim Cup in Germany.
Joan is predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Robert Lyons, and cousin Jean Thorkelson. Joan is survived by her husband, Chris Simcoe; dearest cousins, Shirley Strand (Ken), Lynne Thorkelsson (Ron), Ione Thorkelsson (Dave), Anne Thorkelsson (Jim); godson Craig Strand; her sister-in-law Dawn Bryon (Wayne), and mother-in-law Bernice Mullins (Fab). She is also survived by her best friend, Cheryl Lindblad, close friends Pat and Eunice Hill, and many other family and friends that were dear to her heart.
Joan was such a thoughtful and caring person. She will always be remembered by those fortunate to have her in their lives.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. • Joan was a good friend on mine while working at HSC. She was one of the very few women who worked for Maintenance and was to be admired conquering all that her tough tasks had required for her to do.
